IP.Board 3.2.0 - Visual Skin Editor

Since the very first release of IP.Board, those with a working knowledge of HTML and CSS have been able to alter the look and feel of the board to better match their site.

Over the years, we've made many improvements to the skinning system. For 3.2 alone we've added remote skin editing and more modular CSS to make editing much quicker.

Last year, we introduced the skin generator for customers with an active license. This has been a very popular service and quickly allows customers to produce a new skin that better matches their site colors. However, we felt that we could do better than this tool and do better than our competitors who allow you to 'blindly' change colors from the Admin CP without seeing the immediate effect it has on the board.

Wouldn't it be so much easier to just change the colors while browsing the board? We thought so.

Introducing the Visual Skin Editor
This brand new innovative new feature allows you to edit the board's colors right from the board itself! You don't need to know CSS, you don't even need to remember hex codes and you don't have to blindly edit oddly named CSS classes from the Admin CP.

Live Demonstration
As this feature is best demonstrated, I've recorded a short video in which I make a brand new red themed skin in about five minutes using this new feature.

The usual disclaimer applies: this is work in progress and contains some rough edges that will be smoothed out before release.

As you can see from this video, it's a cinch to create a brand new skin in IP.Board 3.2! If you can point and click and use a basic paint editor on your computer then you're able to use this tool.

We're thrilled to announce this feature and look forward to your feedback and questions.

It looks like this causes the gradients to disappear... or is it just the video quality?

Can't confirm this for you, but I imagine it's due to usability - this is simple, pick a colour etc. Gradients would take more thought to still be 'easy to use' to the end user.

[quote name='Alejandra' timestamp='1308712973'] Whats going to happen to the people currently using 3.1? do we all have to upgrade now to 3.2 to be able to change our skins & use the new skin generator?

You can still use IPB 3.1 and all the old 3.1 skins, but in order to use this new skin feature, you will need IPB 3.2.

TY! Is not really fare for 3.1 users who are Not ready to upgrade yet because the old skin generator is not available anymore which means IF i want to change my skin i will need to upgrade or buy an old 3.1 skin.

I understand your frustration, but that is how technology works. Everything is constantly evolving. Can't hold back innovation. You don't have to upgrade right away, though. You can wait until all your assets are in order on your board and are ready to upgrade. IPS won't push anyone towards upgrading, but I'm sure they would recommend it for the best IPB experience.

The last skin generator did gradients, a flat skin would look pretty dull IMO so I'm hoping this one gets gradients too. (if not, suppose its easy enough to make them in Photoshop and add them in myself)

Regarding gradients - we do have plans in the near future to produce a graident editor. At this point, it won't support them but if you're so inclined you can easily change the skin to a 'manual' skin and add them back in.

This is a great first step. Would be even more awesome if this supported any skin with any CSS. On top of that being able to add manual CSS classes and see it happen would be cool as well. I'd like to see a feature to be able to "pop-out" the window into a separate child popup window.

Matthew Mecham you are a true Englishman born and raised! Unfortunately why do you choose to bastardise the English language with American spelling? You should be promoting true English spelling, it is "colour" not "color". Shame on you!!

Ted.

really nice video and an awesome tool!
Would it be possible to implement an image changer?
So i can i.e. choose the image which i want to change, an upload field appears in the style editor and there i can upload a new one?

Would be really cool!
:)

Amazing!

I'll be honest I'm not a fan of how the layouts changed, I wasn't convinced either when version 3 came about but it grew on me. This will no doubt help those like me who feel it's to bland and lacking the professional feel IPB has. Just too Modern for me but awesome work on the editor :)
