Skin Generator Service

Having a great forum skin is something every forum owner craves. A great skin is a big selling point, as it gives visitors a good first impression, and it colors (pun intended) the overall experience of using that forum. While a great many sites are perfectly happy with the stock IP.Board forum skin, getting something new is often a top priority for sites that are trying to make it big. Up until now, you've had a few options for this:

  • Download or purchase a skin from IPS Resources, or a third party resource site
  • Pay a skinner to make you a custom skin
  • Teach yourself how to skin

While all of these options are certainly good choices, we'd like to introduce another option for you: our Skin Generator service. This is a brand new service we have developed and made available to those with active IP.Board services licenses as a special little perk.

The way the tool works is that it presents you with several options for customizing your skin, such as choosing different color choices:

Clicking on one of the color text boxes there gives you a small UI (from jscolor.com) to choose different colors. You can either use that dialog, or type in a hex color there. There is also an option to apply our 'contrast limiting' function, which attempts to ensure light colors aren't too light, and dark colors aren't too dark; it can be used, or not, to try and get the skin looking the way you want. Once you have chosen colors and any other options, click the Preview button to show what that skin will look like; that shows in the main part of the page. Here's a quick one I created to demonstrate this preview:

Note the tabs at the top for the different views, you can preview your choices in a couple of different forum views there. Here's a Topic View preview of this same skin:

Previewing the skins is cool enough, but it wouldn't be a very good skin generator if it wouldn't let you get the skin you created for use on your own site, would it? Below the options for choosing your skin colors, there is a box for choosing some options to build your skin download:

blogentry-44642-002242300 1269455313_thu

In here, you can name your skin, and choose the IPS applications you have installed, and their versions. By choosing all of these, your downloaded skin will contain all of the appropriate CSS, templates, and image files for all of these apps. No more worrying about whether the skin you got from a resource site has been coded to work with your IP.Gallery install!

Once you fill out this box, click Export, and it'll prompt you to download the .zip file of that skin; the Skin Set and Skin Image Set files will be included in that zip, ready for you to import into your site. Here's one I created and installed on my test board:

Please consider this a beta service at this point. As this is a brand new service plus it is doing something rather difficult (creating a skin automatically) we do expect many bugs. Right now this is designed for IP.Board 3.0.5. We will be upgrading it to IP.Board 3.1 when it is released. Please post any bugs you find or ideas you may have!

That about wraps it up, please let us know what you think, or any other features you'd like to see introduced in future updates! :)

What I ment is:

If we have for examble skin1, skin2, skin3, plus a skin for mobiles, and

If we have set skin2 for [ Using Skin Set: skin2 ] in the forum-category politics then the mobiles can see this category only with the skin2 and not from mobile skin?

The mobile skin is a separate skin altogether, this tool wouldn't create anything for it.

All this tool does is make new skins, what you're asking is about IP.Board functionality. You'd want to ask such a question in a ticket or in the peer-to-peer forums, I don't know enough about the new mobile skin to answer how it works on mobile devices.

When I put the skin in, it seemed to work, but the color of the header (whatever you call the area where the logo is) is still the same as before the change. What did I fail to do? (I had to use the logo changer, of course. It got rid of the Invision logo, but the color is still the same as before the skin.)

Please use the Tracker to report bugs, and be sure to link to the skin you created that you were having trouble with.

I think that there is a "bug" in the palete color algorithm because in the dark skins like this darkskin

The titles of entries in the blogs are black and they can not be seeing in front of a very dark background.

To fix this "bug" we need to change the css code of the look&Feel->css->ipblog.css

from :

or same lighter tone in color.

#main_column .entry h2 a

	{

		color: #000000;

	}

To

#main_column .entry h2 a

	{

		color: #D5DFFC;

Will 3.1 break 3.0 skins?

I haven't migrated from 2 to 3 because I had no time to redo skins, now that I have a few days to give it a try, I was wondering if I would be forced to do it again once 3.1 is out.

Seeing as how the current version of the skin generator isn't really useful yet, it is better to just wait until 3.1 is released along with a new version of the skin generator?

ummm i see a lot of ppl not appreciating this "FREE" service for current customers ...
not nice at all

Michael thank you for this... it saves a lot of time..
One thing though the contrast i see u either give it 0 or 1 as values in the link ... can we choose the % of the contrast?
instead for being 0 - 1
can it be something like
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 degrees / percents of contrast ? just like how we can control text colors
where 9 = 100% contrast
1 = 10% contrast

First off, it would help a lot if you could explain what isn't useful about the skin generator. I've used it to make a new skin for my own site, which I personally didn't have the skill set to do before. If there is more functionality you need for this, by all means, make a suggestion in the feedback forum.

Regarding skins changing between 3.0 and 3.1, yes, skins undergo changes between every IP.Board version. Will the change be as severe as going from 2.3 to 3.0? No, the basic structure of a skin isn't going to change significantly. But templates will change, and CSS will change as well. The upgrade process will almost certainly cause a few minor issues with old skins; they always do, since a skin can't be written that works for versions not yet released.

I didn't mean in a bad way. I just mean that to recreate an old skin I would need to be able to have a little more control than what is currently available.

I know its in beta and I have seen the suggestions so far, so I know that it will be a great thing in the future.

Would like to be able to choose background-color for forums / topics-view / posts - currently it seems to select white or gray for that automatically.

I'm trying to make a brown woodish theme - and the white/gray is breaking it.

Very nice tool though :)
