4.5: Zapier Brings Integration with Over 2,000 Web Apps

Zapier is a service that allows you to connect over 2,000 web apps. In Invision Community 4.5 we are launching a beta service of Zapier integration for Invision Community in the Cloud.

What does Zapier do?

Zapier acts as a bridge between Invision Community and other apps, such as Google Docs, Twitter, Facebook, Slack, Trello, Facebook Ads, ActiveCampaign, Zendesk, Asana, Salesforce, Hubspot, Discord, Stripe and more. Zapier has over 2000 apps registered currently, and that number grows every single day.

Let us look at a real life example.

Right now, if you wanted to add a member to a Google Sheets document each time a new registration was completed, you'd need some fairly complex code to be written that was "triggered" by this registration event. This would take days to write at some cost.

Zapier simplifies this by allowing you to connect Invision Community with Google Sheets without needing a single line of code. Zapier allows you to streamline your workflows in minutes.

Zapier has two types of events, triggers and actions.

Triggers

When a certain thing happens on Invision Community, like a member registering or a topic being posted, a trigger can be sent to Zapier to then run actions in other apps. For example, you might create a zaps to...

  • When a member registers, add their email to a Mailchimp list.
  • When a moderator posts a topic in a news forum, share it on Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms.
  • When a member posts something that requires moderator approval, send a message to a Slack channel for your moderators.

Actions

You can also set up Zaps so that when something happens in an external application, it triggers an action in your Invision Community. For example, you might create a zaps to...

  • When you add an event in a Google Calendar, create a Calendar Event on your community.
  • When you receive an email to a feedback email address, create a topic on your community in a forum for moderators.
  • When you create a task in Trello, add a record to a Pages Database on your community.

Self-Integration

In addition to using Zapier to integrate with third party services, you can also connect an Invision Community trigger to an Invision Community action. For example: when a member registers, create a topic in a welcome forum.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What integrations are available?
In the beta launching with Invision Community 4.5, Zapier will be able receive a trigger when a member account or content (forum post, gallery image, etc.) is created and send actions to create the same. More triggers and actions will be added over time.
  • When will this integration be out of beta?
    Later this year.
  • Will third party applications and plugins be able to create Zapier triggers and actions?
Because the integration requires an app hosted with Zapier (which is written in Node.js) and this has to be submitted directly by the vendor, it will be difficult for third party applications and plugins to integrate with Zapier through Invision Community's integration. In the future we may be able to provide basic abstracted integrations for third party applications and plugins through an extension API. In the meantime, third party authors can of course write their own Zapier Apps if desired.

Pleased to see the external actions and events side of this, but for internals, would have been nice to expose a simple "On CRUD" do "This" within each of the various type admin sections, rather than needing to go out doors.

I am mainly interested in doing the internal automation for now. I.e. replacing the Rules app.

Me too, I see potential in the internal automation.

But in Zapier, apart from mailchip stuff (which I probably wont use since I'm using sendgrid at the moment) I really fail to imagine a scenario where I as a single admin running a mid-size forum would somehow benefit. Well apart from Pages news articles sharing to Facebook (which I've already done with RSS export tools).

I'm happy for the news but can't come up with how that will help things in a big way.

Not sure what is considered a task, but you're only allowed 100 a month for free.  It gets pretty expensive after that.

It's not as bad as it seems. You're only charged if Zapier does something for you. Example that we use:

We use Github internally for software development. If something is being added to the software that any of our staff thinks will need extra testing in beta, they add a special beta-test label in Github.

Every single action we do to Github is sent to Zapier for processing. We have rules in the Zapier Zaps that look for our beta-test label. Only if it's seen does an action happen.

So in this case, Zapier might analyze 100 things we do in Github a day but may only take action on one of them (one we labeled beta-test). It's that one we get charged for.

Also, the amount of really cool things you can do with Zapier makes it worth it. I'm not a programmer and I have really cool workflows in place that help bridge all the services we use at IPS to interconnect with our internal site (running Invision Community) so we all know what's going on.

Hello, Team always doing the best insurmountable things in forums.

A query currently manages a community that every day bigger we are using the integration of discord app of voice chat of servers to synchronize the roles of the forum with the server to deliver roles when buying the members subscriptions in the forum a role in the forum this you also get it on the server discord.

I want to know if this Zapier integration will have the same functions because it would be of great help for the invision community to add the easy integration of discord app with their forums as it does with google, facebook. twitter

thank you

Awesome!!

This will be very usefull. Very important update.

Nevertheless, take a look at integromat.com

Much cheaper then zapier and also very good.

For forums that has a large number of members, Zapier can be very expensive.

Thank you

Exciting news:) Zapier is working on a mobile app, which is going to open just another level of integrations and possibilities for IPS communities using the Zapier integration.

What is the purpose of this app, do you have any sample use case for it?

@Matt we are SO EXCITED about this!! We use Zapier for EVERYTHING! We are on self-hosted plan, though. Can you please tell us the potential timeline for integration to self-hosted plans? Having this access would seriously change our entire website and make it more interactive. We're having a really hard time getting folks to post in the forums and on their own pages. Having this access would allow us the automation we need!

Would love to be kept in the loop.  Now running 4.5.4.2 of Invision but under Community Enhancements, no Zapier yet however if you go to Zapier and search for Invision it does show up and if you click on Connect it needs the API key which isn't available yet since the Zapier enhancement isn't yet available on Invision Community.  <bummer dude>

Hi AA!

We have made the decision to only bring some advanced features to our Cloud and Enterprise communities, and Zapier is one of them. This means that Zapier will not be available for on-premises licenses.

I realise this contradicts my previous statements from last year. I strive for transparency and share what our current thinking is, which means that sometimes we change course in public.

We are planning some more advanced features which need to leverage the computing power of our cloud hosting network and would be almost impossible to implement outside of our hosting. Trying to produce software for the lowest common denominator is getting increasingly challenging as expected standards move on.

To be clear, we're not going to heavily restrict new features available to the on-premises license, and neither are we considering two separate versions of Invision Community. On this occasion, Zapier makes a better fit for our Cloud and Enterprise communities, and it's backed by our own hosting network.

Thanks, Matt, appreciate the frank answer.  Zapier looks like an interesting service, and I can think of many ways to utilize it.

Unfortunately, Invision's Cloud solution would be prohibitively expensive for me as I routinely have over 500 visitors on the forum and over 400GB of files in the uploads directory.  At minimum, I'd need your 750 user service at $590/month, which is more than I pay for the two dedicated servers I'm currently using, to say nothing of the 100GB media and data storage limit.

We are actually in the process of revamping our cloud plans to be much more generous with data storage and are considering other metrics as the headline differentiator.
