Managing successful online communities

4.5: One More Thing...

Almost ten years ago we launched the Marketplace; a place to connect Invision Community owners with talented developers creating new functionality.

Over the decade, the Marketplace has grown to hold thousands of applications, large and small. For many Invision Community owners, the Marketplace has become an essential resource.

Our aim was always to have the Marketplace available inside your Admin Control Panel to make it even easier to purchase and install extra functionality.

I'm pleased to say that as of Invision Community 4.5, this is now a reality. You can browse the Marketplace and install new add-ons without leaving the Admin Control Panel.

Obtaining Resources

Paid resources can be purchased directly from the Marketplace and are available to install immediately after the payment is complete. You no longer need to download and install the files yourself.

You may also notice some additional information with the resource listing, we'll be introducing a new 'tab' to marketplace resources to allow the authors to provide more useful information such as answers to frequently asked questions, or configuration instructions etc.

The video below takes you through the purchase and installation of a Marketplace application.

Updates

Some of the eagle-eyed among you may have noticed in the first screenshot that there are more 'bubbles' showing in the menu on the left. These are supported for Applications, Plugins, Themes and Languages.

In Invision Community 4.5 every resource available via the AdminCP is automatically versioned, you will see update notifications for everything you have installed (previously, you would only see update notices if the resource author supports them).

Installing an update is as simple as clicking on the update notice, then clicking 'update' on the Marketplace listing.

Downloads Changes

Our Marketplace is built on our Downloads application, during development of this feature we needed to add new functionality. We have included as many of these improvements as possible in our software for the benefit of our customers, some of these are:

  • Custom Fields can now be set to only show to members that have purchased a file.
  • Files can now be set to accept a single file upload instead of multiple.
  • New file versions can now be moderated without hiding the current version from view.
  • Downloads REST API
    • Performance Improvements
    • New /download endpoint that counts the download
    • Added more data to the /downloads/file/{id} response
    • Ability to sort file results by last updated date

We hope you're as excited about this feature as we are.

Well that means that without an active license you cant re-install your site if something happens...

You never could since 4.0.0 as fresh install requires an active license. This post is about the ability to purchase on marketplace. Now will require an active license too.

It doesn't need FTP or anything fancy, the video in the blog shows the install process.

I don't recall the last time something was removed like that. What we can do instead is make a resource un-purchasable, so that any customer that has paid for it continues to have access to it.

Still archive your own addons/skins whatever is the user's right/owner. If I like to do that why not, it not hurting anyone. But also nothing official from IPS. So, I want for more words from the makers to get an real low-down then just right or wrong. Firm facts is what I seek.

You can consider my response as "official".

If you have paid for a resource that then becomes un-purchasable (i..e the author vanishes or there's a temporary issue with it) you will still be able to download it. You've paid for it. If your own license expires, you will still be able to update the resource you have paid for (providing it's compatible with your current version of Invision Community).

It still better to have your own copy and such.

Will contributors receive a notification when the new version is approved? It sucks have to look at the file itself several times to see if it was approved then create a topic in support topic.

EDIT: just asking; not happened to me as I submitted my first one; just curious.

You would have, but you reported that as a bug!

In all seriousness, we'll look into adding a notification for this.

@Stuart Silvester

I’m behind by sometime, so I’m sure it was answered elsewhere, but will there still be an option for manual installs? Or will everything be housed in the ‘cloud’ basically?

You will install resources directly in the AdminCP Marketplace, there is no more downloading resources manually and then having to upload them. - To be clear, you can still upload resources (your own custom apps, themes etc) to your community manually, we are not going to remove that functionality.

Ah okay. So basically, you removed the marketplace store front and embedded it into the suite to install, but left the functionality for manual installs if people so choose of their own resources or from people who offer resources on their own personal sites instead of the marketplace (hardly anyone does that these days, except for themes like Ehrens)

Yes that's right.
