New: Downloads Index Page

This entry is about our IPS Community Suite 4.2 release

In IPS Community Suite 4.2 we have added a bunch of new settings for the Downloads Index Page.

Downloads Index Page - Settings

With 4.2 you'll be able to hide any of the boxes.

Another often requested feature was that people want to be able to choose the categories from where the files should be fetched
This way you'll be able to hide files from some very old categories.

This is the first blog entry by @Daniel F and he was a bit nervous writing it. I am sure he'll hate me saying that ;)

But I think he did a great job and the feature will be really useful for those who heavily use our Downloads app.

Waiting some requested updates for Commerce, so people "heavily using" it will be happy as well :)

Good write up @Daniel F . Would it be possible to have the categories section on the left are right side as a block placement? The drop down from the top don't seem like it lines up with IPB's standards and theme. What I mean is its pretty lacking just it on the top like that as well as really out for place, on mobile I can see this working. For a full web page it don't fit in with the rest of the suite as everything in other places are style to work with page.

Thanks for the article DanielF!

Agreed the Downloads Index page is quite stale looking and could do with some IPS Feng Shui love! ??

It's weird how the featured downloads slider on the Downloads index page still isn't touch enabled in this day and age, instinctively you go to swipe through the downloads when using a tablet and then find you can't and instead you have to catch the left or right buttons just right.

Same with the Gallery images widget for main forums index, it could also do with being touch enabled and let you choose random images from specific Gallery categories instead of the persistent recent images if nobody has uploaded new ones for a while.

That's only on mobile - on desktop the categories are in a menu just like in 4.1.

Oh! I didn't read anything about it being shown in mobile so one could only guess. Maybe add that part to the article so that people don't misunderstand like I did.

I thought 1st record was

A question

Why blocks have different settings?

Featured Downloads. Show and Number. Where is a Categories?

What's New. Show and Categories. Where is a Number?

Highest Rated. Show and Categories. Where is a Number?

Most Downloaded. Show and Categories. Where is a Number?

Great! I love every aspect of the upgrade and tuning of the downloads section!

Another really nice enhancement would be some more 'downloads boxes' to configure, maybe as a feature in a future release:

  • Box with only paid files
  • Box with only free files
  • Box with editors choice (another one like a second "featured" box in the looks of "multiple downloads in a row"
