  1. Hey, we have published the first article of a series about upcoming 4.6 changes. We took the opportunity for some spring cleaning, so we have removed most of the deprecated methods! They were all marked as deprecated for a while, so you should already be aware of these methods, but here’s a full list of the methods and the new approaches to make your life easier, so if you haven’t already, now it’s the best time to review your code and make sure that none of these methods is used. Most of the changes can already be implemented while the 4.5.x lifecycle.

  2. CKEditor 4 is reaching the end of life (source). Instead of jumping onto the CKEditor 5 bandwagon, I propose Invision consider an alternative editor. There are many well-established modern editors such as, for example, TinyMCE, Froala, Quill, and Redactor, to name a few. Any of these would make satisfactory alternatives. CKEditor may be 'old school,' but it has become bloated, larger in file size and load time. Most of the issues it encounters often have to do with responsive layouts on a mobile device and excessive load time. As mobile continues to dominate the landscape, I feel it may be prudent to focus on an editor development that has kept up successfully with the times with the least issues. Changing the editor should not be expected in the next release. But a roadmap should be considered for a future transition. Thank you for your time and consideration. 😀

  3. We're very much aware of CKEditor 5. As mentioned above, the migration to v5 isn't a simple case of dropping in the new files. We'd need to re-code all of our custom plugins that handle many things including embedding, drag and drop uploading and much more. CKEditor 4 is supported until 2023. While CKEditor 5 brings many useful new things, it's not urgent enough for us to "down tools" and focus a 6-12 week block on it. It's on our roadmap along with other javascript improvements that we want to develop and deploy.

  4. Few months have passed since our last post here, so let's get ready to rumble🙂 Supported PHP & MySQL Versions: The PHP min version was increased to PHP 7.2 in IPS 4.6, this means that your marketplace submissions are required to work with this version, but keep in mind that few clients are going to use php8, so I would really suggest to try to get your code working with both versions, which means that you'll need to implement some changes to avoid some BC breaks in PHP8. Here's a great list https://www.php.net/manual/en/migration80.incompatible.php Security Improvements: I have mentioned this change in another topic today, so let's recap it here too:) We have a new IN_DEV code check similar to the slash check, which will inform you about any outputs containing the CSRF key in the URL. This is a bad practice allowing attackers and 3rd parties to obtain the users CSRF key, so please try avoid this at any cost! We're not going to reject MP submissions because of this, but please try to avoid this as much as much as possible. Withdrawal Requests: Please keep in mind that you're permitted to have only one payout request per week;) Since this didn't work out that great and to avoid any drama about canceled requests, this is going to be handled now automatically. As long as there's an open request, you won't be able to submit any new requests! But don't worry, you'll still be able to cancel it and create a new request!

  5. The +1 button was a great idea but please return or improve the number of reactions here at the IPS Community forum. It's feels to me IMHO almost like we're being stifled by some dark, manipulative branding and marketing PR department or something. Reactions allowing the ability to show you you're saddened, disagree or are confused about something and help provide a balance of opinion, freedom of expression and thought. Thanks for reading.

  6. Invision Community 4.6 brings a brand new achievements system which overhauls the ranks system along with adding the ability to earn points which translates into a higher rank via rules. As part of the clean-up, we removed the custom member title from the author section of the post as there's a limit to how much information we can show comfortably! Of course, some communities used custom member titles and wish to continue using them. Fortunately it's easy enough to get them back. Step 1: Log into the ACP and navigate to Members > Profiles > Profile Fields Step 2: You will see a group called "Retained", inside is a new custom field called "Member Title". This profile field was used in the upgrade to save the custom member title data. Click on the pencil icon to edit. Step 3: Post upgrade, this field is effectively switched off, but it can easily be switched back on. For the "Display format for topics" choose custom and just use: {$content} as the value. This will remove the "Member Title:" prefix. Save the changes. You will now see the member title has been restored. Advanced tip: Only do this if you are comfortable making theme edits! If it all goes wrong, don't panic. There is a revert button to undo your changes! Edit the template bit Forums > topics > postContainer in your active theme and move the block highlighted here up underneath the {{endif}} of the {{$comment->isAnonymous()}} block.

  7. Welcome to part 3 ( Part 1 & Part 2 ) of our series for 3rd party developers. Let's recap the interesting stuff: A new extension was added to the core app to allow 3rd party apps to extend the achievements. Content Items can be marked as anonymous We have cleaned up our code and have removed almost all the deprecated methods and variables! One if the most concerning changes for IN_DEV users will probably be our new ACP warning once the CSRF Key is being exposed in the ACP That's nothing to worry about, it's only returned with enabled IN_DEV mode, but please take it serious and try to avoid any redirect to any URL containing the CSRF key and containing user generated content.

  8. As some of you may already know, I'm supporting @TheJackal84's file since March, 19. We started to talk about this deal on Feb, 21. So in this regard, I would like to state publicity that I am not getting the expected return/attention from TheJackal84, which has not: given me the list of purchasers of the resources in his website. So what it has to do you with you? I'm not able to add a purchase here on IPS so you can keep downloading updates, if you purchased it there. Why I can't? Because I can't simply trust in words from everyone that requests files. I need to make sure you purchased and when they will expire. Just checked his website and his community doesn't exists anymore: https://flashmodding.com/. If it was there yet you would just need to take a screenshot from the Manage Purchases page. So you can still prove your purchase by sending a PM with the PayPal purchase, etc. In sign of good faith, I will add a full year of support to the proven resources, without take the renewal date in consideration. provided the XML from the plugins, which we can't download from the new marketplace (4.5), so there's no way for me to support these resources now. I will try to get them with IPS (I will speak directly to Lindy). I would also like to inform you that there are other pending issues that are not relevant for this matter but they definitely exists. Thank you.

  9. To recap: You do not need to enable the new rules, badges and ranks. There is an option pre-upgrade that asks you if you want to switch to the new system or not. If you choose not to, then you retain the existing ranks you already have. The upgrade will also move any custom titles across to a new custom profile field. If you want to show the custom member title under the user's photo in a post, then just switch on these custom field settings which are off after the upgrade.

    Mental Health

There will be a lot of talk here about physical health and I am sure @Matt will never miss a chance to post about his runs. I also want to be sure we are all open to talking about mental health too. I am a big proponent in saying that there is no shame or stigma in talking about mental health. I often say that people will loudly talk about a head cold or an infection, but not about mental health. But be it physical or mental: you are sick. It is not your fault. There are also treatments that will help you if you reach out. So chat away if you want to. I have experience in dealing with mental health and I am sure others do too. If you are not comfortable talking about mental health, then I hope just reading what others say can help you on your journey. Safe space and such.

    Pages - Update

I've spoken briefly in other topics on how lamentable the Pages app is for those who do not possess the skills to create their own templates and layouts. The Pages app is heralded as one of the most powerful applications in the suite, and it may be for those who can harness the power it yields. For everyone else it is a minefield to navigate and a lot of people either just give up on it or resort to plugins from the marketplace, which are generally pretty good at what they offer but they are limited by the functions which developer has designed the plugin to do. One of the most powerful page layout generators I have come across is a WordPress plugin called the Divi Builder (made by www.elgantthemes.com) - it is one hell of a powerful tool that allows you to develop complex pages using adaptable rows and columns. An example of some of the basic layouts offered (which can be applied on a row by row basis) is shown below: At present, Pages is constrained to 1,2 or 3 column layouts which cannot be applied on a row by row basis. For example you CAN mix some columns in Pages but you are stuck with X number of columns on top/bottom with a single column that sits above or below; you can't have single column, two/three column another single column and another two/three column layout, etc. The other pain with Pages is that the column widths are non-negotiable; two columns will span the width of the container equally - you can't have one column take up 60% of the real estate with the other column taking up the other 40%, that is incredibly restrictive. I'm not advocating that Pages mimic the Divi Builder in all of the features it brings - it's module based and there are loads of different modules that can be dragged into the layout - but Pages can make a start by giving more power to layouts. That would be a massive improvement on what sits there now. The other noticeable missing aspect is the ability to add pages to a page layout. Very long articles would be better if they were broken into pages much like a book. Single column layouts could have an added feature of making a page columned where the text will flow naturally from one column to another, much as it does in Microsoft Word, for those reading on wider screens. Stacking order for columns on smaller screens would be another feature bonus where you can choose to stack the most important blocks near the top with the least important below. This is just the tip of the iceberg as to what Pages can become as truly outstanding CMS application within the IPS Suite. How much work would lie behind such an undertaking I have no idea, but it would be worthwhile and it would be a huge boon to those who want to harness the power of the Pages application and create some beautiful page layouts that capture the imagination. Thoughts? More suggestions also welcome as this is something that can be of benefit to everyone. Thanks for reading.

  14. This is because there are a lot of opinion based threads here. I don't think "Like" is a good reaction when you want to agree or support what has been said in a thread but currently the only agreeable reaction. Like is a broad (and at least for me) a very default way for people to respond/react to something that they simply think was a good read. In some cases I would like to actually agree with what the member is saying or support it with a +1. To me agreeing versus liking something will give me a better way to show my appreciation to a members post. An example a cute joke in the middle of an opinion thread would get a like or a 'haha' but something that brings up good points can get my 'agree'.

    invisioncommunity discord?

Discord has its place. It's a great tool if you're just starting a community and want to see if there's a need, or you want a semi-asynchronous chat that focuses on a 24-48 hour time window. However, we have a mature support community so it's less useful. We want to encourage thoughtful posts that have a life beyond a few days. We want others to find these topics from search engines and we want to build a crowdsourced knowledgeable for Invision Community. If we were to create an official Discord, it would create a brain drain and instead of us being able to look back and look at feature request trends, or customers being able to search for answers to their questions we have a 'here and now' relatively informal chat room.

  16. I think this is better as a plugin. It's a seriously infected issue that will cause division in the user base. Personally I would never add it, unless my community is based around a community that think this is important. The reason for that is that it is pretty much a safe bet that people will behave just as bad as on Twitter and I think we have enough trolls to worry about to not add strife amongst our members if we can prevent it. I am all for expressing yourself and adding whatever labels you feel is appropriate to your community, but this is what custom fields are for and this is what plugins should be used for in my opinion.

  17. I think there are two different use cases: Editor for user-generated content. Should be simple, not too many options, clear and foolproof. I think that the actual IPS editor fulfills the requirement. Editor for articles wrote by admin. Should be powerful, have many options (text positioning, blocks, columns, grids, custom code pieces, custom styles, extendable with SEO and other plugins, have additional extensions via Marketplace etc.) For this case, the actual IPS editor is not enough.

  18. Just a little suggestion about 'Who's Online' For example: Who is Online: 3 Members, 0 Anonymous, 20 Guests If there is no anonymous user, system must hide it automatically like: Who is Online: 3 Members, 20 Guests or if there are only guests on forum: Who is Online: 20 Guests It'll be a little better, right?

  20. Perhaps this is a pipe dream, but as sub-economies have proven to be a very effective way of hijacking goal-oriented psychology I would love to see a native points system in IPB. In such an application one could develop different "banks" for different types of points systems depending on the nature of your website. Examples: "credits" (for purchasing services, Store products, exchanging for cash donations to relevant charities) tokens (for gambling, buying bling for their online personae) hours (if you're like me, you sell hours of tuition and/or consultation) How might these points be accumulated/awarded? Examples: buying blocks of tokens/credits/hours in the Store buying Store products: buy product X and get Y amount of credits in points system Z having the highest-rated answers in a Q/A Support forum having the highest reputation in a given forum Awarding points to people who invite new members to your community completing courses or other certifications Other ideas: Targeted emails to certain groups, or certain individuals when credits/tokens/hours are at X or 0 - time to get more!) Targeted emails to people indicating they've been awarded free tokens/credits/etc. Promotions where points are awarded under special circumstances from dates X to Y Toss tokens into a (virtual) fight pit and watch your community fight for them. Cue the oldschool Star Trek fight music. Dance, puppets, daaaaance! mwuahahaha) Hijacking goal-oriented psych--err, offering points could be a great way to spur development and participation in one's community. They could also obviously be integrated into other apps (or other apps could make use of points) as part of competitions, e.g., submitting the highest-rated photos, articles, blog posts, etc. The possibilities go on and on! As some know there have been a couple of third-party devs who have made Points systems, but I have come to think that if one is going to embed something like this into a community (let alone a business) I wouldn't want to trust it to anyone but the core developers for updates and stability. I obviously can't speak for others, but I for one would be happy to pay for this as an additional (optional) IPS module, similar to the way IP.Downloads is offered.

  21. If IPS is serious about gamification, here are some foundational points: Entire suite -- Not just forums. Not just apps. But the entirety and power of the full Invision suite: uploading a cover photo, filling out a profile custom field, writing a status update, making a blog post, RSVPing to a calendar event, getting a post marked as best answer, creating an album, renewing a subscription for the sixth time, winning second in the leaderboard, getting an item promoted. Weighted -- Writing an in-depth long-form blog is very different from uploading one image, but IPS weighs them the same as one content item. They shouldn't count the same. Customizable -- I would like a gamification system to be customizable to exclude / include nodes, categories, and apps. How I reward my users is very different than how you run your community or how Invision runs its community. How we offer member journeys will be as diverse as our communities. Clubs -- I would like a gamification system to include clubs. Not nearly at the same amount of customization, but each club deserves its own basic set. Meaningful -- The rewards should be: Immediate, Recognize the relative difficulty of the accomplishment, and Provide the steps needed to get to the next reward. Typical reward: "Congrats, you won a badge for making X posts." Better reward: "Congrats, you won a badge for making X posts, an accomplishment that puts you into the top 10% of users. Your next badge is at Y posts." Attention Grabbing -- If a tree falls in a forest and no notification is sent out, does anybody care? Gamification needs to have movement, to have excitement, to be dynamic, and offer a call to action. What I'd like for gamification to address: Profile onboarding - I've logged in to the accounts of multiple users over the years, and every single one has totally ignored the Profile Completion. I would love to actually see usage statistics on larger sites, but at least on my site, most users don't care about Profile Completion. I'd rather deprecate Profile Completion in favor of Gamification. New user activation - There needs to be multiple calls to action within the first X minutes, where X is the site's average session duration. I've seen first-hand how if I can talk live to a user when he first joins, his posting skyrockets at least over that session. There needs to be activity, excitement, and movement within that first session duration. Member pathways - Users find fulfillment in many ways in our communities. We need to empower them to both progress along certain member pathways while encouraging them to also explore other pathways.

  23. PHP 8.0.0 has been released. Some bugs that I've found in a couple of minutes of testing: There are a bunch of deprecation warnings for required parameters following optional parameters - from my search with the regex function\s*\w+\s*\([^=)]*=[^)]*,\s*\$[^,)=]*[,)] there are 47 instances of this in the suite. It should be safe to remove all of the offending default parameters, since they can never be utilised. The cms lang key can_edit_item_message_record is invalid - it contains %S rather than %s, which causes the page to (randomly?) 500. Fatal error: Cannot make static method XMLReader::open() non static in class IPS\Xml\_XMLReader in .../system/Xml/XMLReader.php on line 34 (this might be a fun one to fix - it's a PHP 8 change that isn't compatible in either direction - https://www.php.net/manual/en/xmlreader.open.php#refsect1-xmlreader.open-changelog - you probably have to make a new method that delegates instead) TypeError: method_exists(): Argument #1 ($object_or_class) must be of type object|string, null given from statusContainer.phtml:133 (when viewing a feed containing status updates) PHP Fatal error: Unparenthesized `a ? b : c ? d : e` is not supported. 24. I’ve complained before that wiki editing shouldn’t have an original author, or owner, at all. While the authors/editors should be in the editing history the listing itself should never truly have a single author. It should be possible, especially in pages, to set multiple owners. You see this behavior on major websites such as Microsoft where the people that have contributed/have ownership of the listing are listed as “contributors”. I would like to empower my users to allow secondary editors to some of the contributions so those people also have the ability to edit their content. Sort of like adding a moderator to a forum, do it at the listing level in pages.

  25. Hello there! The main purpose of user profiles is to make discovering user's content easier. I've found a way to improve the process a bit. 1. Content discovery Let's take a look on my profile and especially on the filtering options: Problem: It's quite a long list that grows with every new app or a content type. I find it confusing as during my time here I've posted only a topic and some posts. I don't think I'm able to post anything in the documentation, release notes, providers, guides, IPS Blog etc. But I'm still able to filter my results by those options [basically to get no results note]. Solution: The idea is to hide all the empty-result-filters. Thanks to this we exactly know what type of content certain user posted, and save our time on scanning the long list. 2. Reputation view I wanted to check my reputaion activity and this happened: Problem: The page shows no results. Quite confusing as the sidebar clearly shows that I do have reputation activity. This is because by default the resulsts are filtered by Status updates in which I have no activity. And the list of possible filters is also very long (as stated above). Solution: As we have All activity filter in user's content page by default, we should also have All reputation activity filter in user's reputation page. And limiting the possible filters would (as above) make the experience more intuitive and clear. In my case it would look like this as I have reputation activity in blog entries, blog comments and posts: Thanks for reading! 🙂

  26. Hi, I have a few suggestions for Pages App that I miss a lot after switching from Wordpress. The application itself works great and is very flexible, but it still lacks a lot of options, which I will try to describe below. First of all option which I miss on start is a Poll/Vote option, because I cannot add a poll with voting in any way to article, which is available only in the forum application. It would be great to see possibility to adding a poll into our articles. Tables - it is not possible to insert tables with a certain number of columns and rows. This option isn't available in any of the apps, but it would be nice to see one in Pages. For example, I am adding a table with 3 columns and 5 rows, e.g. for movies. The columns contain information such as the name of the film, Production Year and Genre, which can be sorted in ascending or descending order, while in the rows we complete the data related to the columns. Author Box - as simply as the name suggests, adding the option to insert a small window about the author of the content and a short description of it, which would be added as a widget from the side panel in any selected place, e.g. under the content of an article in Pages. These are all my suggestions so far, I hope one of them will be in a newer version of Pages.

  27. We utilize a very large gallery and at times there is a need for some mass cleanup. We have noticed the following items could be improved: Currently there is no option to select multiple images to change owner, must be done one by one. You can hide/delete/etc, but not alter ownership. Currently there is no option to move images into another users album if moderator/admin. You can only move them into albums you have created. If an album has ownership changed, there is no option to apply that change to the images inside the album. Therefore the album is under a new owner, but the images remain under the original album owner. This is ok in some cases, but undesirable in others, an option would be helpful here.

It goes without saying that we all want every one of the marketplace apps to be updated within days of a new release. We need to better manage our expectations as Adriano has a very large collection of marketplace and custom apps that he supports. They will all be updated when they get updated and not a moment sooner. Coding and testing works best when you are in a good frame of mind. Being constantly pestered for updates is unlikely to put Adriano in such a state. Be of good cheer@Adriano Fariaand the other marketplace developers, we appreciate all of you...

    Job Board App ?

Ok, let me talk about this a bit more. I abandoned the development a couple of months ago because it was very difficult to try to reconcile the interest of all the people who were participating with suggestions. Too hard. Everyone wanted the app to work according to what was best for their forums. This makes development impractical. So I quit. But I continued developing it as a marketplace resource and it will be available on marketplace soon. Here goes some screens of the app (please bear in mind that this is still in development and things can change, especially layout): - Job Opportunity view: - You will be able to create multiple application forms in the ACP: - You can add as many fields as you want per application form: - Each form has its own permission: - So users who are creating a job opportunity will be able to use only forms available to their groups: - The application form when the user clicks in APPLY!, based in the application form chosen when creating the job opportunity: - Adding a job opportunity: You will be able to use Commerce in the application (charge for job opportunity submission). Should be available soon!

  36. Thanks @SUBRTX - that's at least a step in the right direction, which is great news. However, as I've just posted over in the comments on that link, I don't think it's been thought through very well. Here's what I posted over there. ======================== I just had a closer read of it and and whilst it is a step in the right direction, I still don't think it's amazing. Most people that use these notifications will still want to be notified when one of their posts is quoted by someone else. But no-one wants to be notified when their post get a like/reaction. So, keeping "quoted" and "reactions" bundled into a single option is a mistake in my opinion. I feel like "quotes" should either be bundled with "replies / mentions" or setup as it's own option. To be honest - for the best granularity - IMHO all 4 options should be separate. I.e. - REPLIES [ON / OFF] - MENTIONS [ON / OFF] - QUOTES [ON / OFF] - REACTIPONS [ON / OFF]

  43. I’m a Luddite...62 years old and retired from a career in Commercial Art; specifically graphic design. No industry went digital as fast and as completely as the graphic design field. We went from building mechanicals on drafting tables to using computers and Software overnight, starting in the mid 80’s. I developed a severe case of Upgrade PTSD. Back then every upgrade or update of OS, and design software, was wrought with issues. Files wouldn’t open, fonts wouldn’t work, it was always a cluster, and work flow was impacted. We learned to hate Upgrades, So, in addition to living in the woods of a Maine with extremely glitchy DSL “high speed” internet at a whopping 7 mbps...that’s not a typo. I put off IPB Upgrades and typically ask Support to perform even the most minor ones. Recently I found myself 15 Upgrades behind...with no SSL Certificate...and my Board of 19 years...again not a typo...(I launched my Discussion Community back in 2002 on Ikonboard) was experiencing all sorts of errors and issues. I finally contacted Support, and they were responsive and professional and they resolved the SSL Security situation, and the Upgrade(s), and moved my Board to the new Cloud II Server. There are some minor Member issues to work out, and I’m becoming accustomed to the new features, look and functionality, but generally things on Board are snappy and going well. For someone who isn’t as fluid as many here with the backend of the IPB Suites and Software, and suffers from Upgrade and Digital PTSD, having the Support team on call is a huge relief. I’m not putting off Upgrades any longer...I promise.

Google is focusing more and more on direct answers, answer boxes, review boxes, faq schemas. We need those in IPB. Invision teams says on and on about SEO improvements so please add something that really works for SEO and getting higher CTR. I created this topic after getting no help from Invision team here - And I was forced to use support to get answer which was:

    Replace Badges

We decided to create our own solution to overwrite badges, add some progress bar to next badge and to show users how many and what badge is next. Like how many post he have and how many days on site. I have working on addon to do it.

  49. So, the "communities" app has been out as a beta since september - that's more that 5 months now. But since it's launch there were no updates on it regarding when to expect it to be "stable", we've had a completely "game breaking" bug with it (screen turns white once you log in) and there has been no fix, ETA on a fix, or any communication on the matter since our ticket was closed with a resounding "It's a beta". Having an app that can push notifications to members' mobile devices was one of the major reasons that made us choose to move our community to IPS instead of other platforms. And for quite a while it feels like we're being toyed with. Can we get some answers, updates, ETAs, or any kind of information regarding that very central and meaningful part of the service you guys are charging good money for? Or are we just going to stay in this loop of you making promises, us spending money, and then endlessly waiting for an implementation that never comes?
