  1. As JS continues to modernize and become more usable as a core scripting language, I feel like we'll see jQuery at the very least become superseded by something lighter and more powerful. But there's never likely a time where we'll move to just raw JS for complex applications. Some type of library will always be needed for the reasons Matt said. Those libraries will likely become lighter and faster, but they'll still exist.

  2. jQuery is obviously not needed in 2021 - I'd love to do away with it. In reality, we have many thousands of lines of JS and the cost/benefit of rewriting everything for that reason alone isn't really there. Plus, we'd likely end up with a lot of helper methods that are essentially reimplementing some of jQuery's helper methods. We use some of the more advanced jQuery features too, so it wouldn't be as simple as updating .find to .querySelectorAll. So, the answer is: yes, I agree, but it isn't as simple as saying "let's do that". Also, in reality, if we were going to take the opportun

  3. Yeah, I was very enthusiastic about this until I read that self-hosted clients like myself were left twisting in the wind on this. 😞 I, too, am concerned about a possible paradigm shift that would leave self-hosted clients more and more out in the cold. Not that I distrust the cloud (for the most part), but I lease a VPS and I love having a VPS; I can run Invision, I can create test/developmental sites, I have root access and can experiment with other apps and platforms for resource management and other things. I wouldn't have it any other way...and, to be quite honest (and no offense),

  4. Yeah, I agree. We picked jQuery a good while ago. If we were starting from scratch, we might pick something lighter now.

  5. I feel like anyone who lived through 1999-2006 feels the answer to "Do we need jQuery" is a strong yes. Of course, we could remove jQuery. What jQuery does is make life simpler for developers (as well as resolve a lot of cross browser quirks so developers don't have to think too hard about that). What that blog effectively advocates is the reversal of the number one rule of programming "be lazy". Functions and methods are reusable for a reason. For an app as broad and as complex as ours, replacing jQuery with vanilla javascript isn't really viable. We have tens of thousands of lin

  9. I've been with you since the days of Ikonboard, so you I love you. However, I'm starting to grow concerned after reading that IPS have made a specific, conscious decision to start restricting features (albeit with the first) to cloud-hosted SAAS customers. It's perhaps akin the to the controversial Marketplace changes. As a multi-license customer, I'm saddened that there is a visible "It's our way, or the highway" style approach that seems to be increasing these days. This statement feels like it could be the start of a paradigm shift, and if so, one that I'm concerned is edging gradually

    Updates to our community

You’ve probably already noticed that something looks a little different in our community today. As part of our ongoing community improvements, we’ve performed some housekeeping to streamline the forum structure, make more distinction between areas and open up a few areas to guests and friends. The big visual change is that we now have four separate areas: support, community, marketplace and developers. It should hopefully be clear what each section does, but let's go through a few examples. Support This area is where you can leave feedback on existing features, help shape I

  12. Apologies for that - I've submitted a request to IPS for them to put a block on v2.0.x being available while I look into this one further. Will either have the JS sorted out, or a revert back to the previous back-end processing, in a few days time...will update here when all good.

    Community Map

In Pages you are using an "Address" kind of field. The IPS framework will not get the coordinates when the address is incomplete. When you add a partial address in your profile, which is then picked up by Community Map, it will do a request to MapQuest in order to get the location. I'll see if I can do anything about this.

  14. You make a lot of points. Google could very well continue to be the black hole that gobbles up all of the surrounding Internet stardust. However, just like the mysteries of space, we don't know what's going to happen. The what if game is dangerous. There are many things we can focus our attention on that is in our control, like the growth of Invision Community and finding our niche place on the worldwide web despite the Google juggernaut stomping its way into our existence. All that to say Invision Community does have its sights set on developing video because we understand the imp

  26. I spent numerous hours crafting my Terms and Privacy Policies and and thought I had a pretty good handle on covering all of my bases. I would like to implement the IPS Community App and various Community Enhancements and Login Handlers in the future. I happened to come across the article below this evening and it got me thinking: How much personal data or inferred data this app might be trackable for each user and how one might best let members know so they can make an informed decision whether or not if they want to use the app or other third party services. 27. I will be candid with you and straightforward. YES, anything you add to your website, embed on your website, or enable onto your website can and will further allow tracking and data collection. Even your users, hotlinking a harmless photo, can trigger further monitoring and data collection. Yes, 3rd parties will collect your information and all your users too. Suppose you are using Google login and Google Analytics (for example). In that case, Google will include several tracking cookies well beyond your website's interactions. Facebook login will add their own cookies to track yo

And I realize it may not be possible to add a separate Cardholder name to the system, but when adding/entering a new credit card, I don't think the assumption should be that the Customer Name (which it does not show on the screen - though perhaps this is a setting somewhere...) is the same as the Card Holder name.

  30. Hey team! @Jordan Invision here. Slipping into my other account on Sunday funday to see what your thoughts are on this idea I've been thinking about. For many years, I've been interested in removing ads from my forum, but I think the standard subscription model for my community wouldn't go over well. I don't have any concrete proof, just a hunch. Now, if my members could actually earn money via Stripe for posting engaging content within our rules, that would be epic. --- Recently, I've been writing articles on Medium. Their business model (to me) is brilliant. Everyone w

  31. @breatheheavyI like this idea a "lot" as well as your other ideas and many others here in the community. Unfortunately they may never get implemented as IPS has limited bandwith and the marketplace developers are pretty much maxed out for the foreseeable future. There is also the concern of how many of the total customer base would utilize any particular idea. I think this one would prove popular and should be considered for inclusion. The big question is does it get added to the core or would a new app be built akin to clubs that members would purchase to help offset the additional developm

    We need webp NOW

Keyword being almost. 10% of unsupported users of those being tracked is quite a lot of users. I would still argue that unless the format is officially supported as an industry standard and fully supported in commercial platforms, both for producing graphics and for displaying graphics, it is a risk to add it to your commercial software. Besides, it even says so on the page that webp is already being challenged by an even better standard in AVIF that is developed by AOM. Do you really think that Google will come out on top with a BSD licensed image format against an open format backed by

    We need webp NOW

Anything that requires doing registry edits means it's not something that's accessible to the common user is my point. Until it just works out of the box, without needing you to manually enable anything, it's still a problem, and why you should work to avoid having users download files in WebP format to begin with. Me personally, I use Directory Opus as a drop-in replacement for Windows Explorer, which has its own photo viewer that is vastly superior to Windows', so the issue doesn't apply to me personally, I'm just thinking in regards to the average end user. This is not at all

    We need webp NOW

The classic Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 10 supports WebP. This means that you can open WebP photos with Windows Photo Viewer without installing any codec or plugin. Right-click on the WebP picture file, click Open with, and then select Windows Photo Viewer to open the WebP image with Windows Photo Viewer. However, the catch is that Windows Photo Viewer has been turned off by default. You need to enable it. Doing that is pretty easy. Open Notepad and save this as PhotoViewer.reg (be sure not to save it as a text document). Right click the reg file and select, Merge. Then find a WebP ph

    We need webp NOW

FWIW if your users download images as WebP, they probably can't open/view them on their desktop either. Windows, at the very least, does not recognize WebP as an image format. You should avoid having your users download images in WebP format. Serving them in-browser is fine, but the original downloads should always be PNG, JPEG, GIF or so on until this changes.

  39. I think it would be extremely interesting if you followed up with the community in six months or one year with an analysis of your 26 emojis. Were they all used equally and actively? Or were only a handful of emojis used? My gut tells me that once you exceed 6 reactions, the marginal benefit of each additional reaction doesn't do a whole lot.

    IPB as a LMS

Sure. But that argument could be used for literally hundreds of functions and services that IPS could theoretically build to attract some new audience. Because it works for everything, it doesn’t mean much. As Paul already said, there a many many LMS providers already out there, who have worked for years in teams exclusively on this one product—so they are far ahead and will likely always remain ahead for years to come. It makes very little sense that IPS starts from scratch to compete with them through a completely new app, just to maybe get a few new customers in a competitive market, whe

The main reason I have upgraded to 4.5 was the mobile app cause I took the hard decision a few years ago and deleted Tapatalk which resulted several users to go other sites or use whatsapp instead.
