  1. When you get a chance, adding into the Administrators Log entries for when the the core IPS apps are updated/patched would be appreciated. 3rd party app upgrades are clearly indicated in the Administrators Log, but not a thing for IPS app upgrades. It's a bit a of a gap right now; probably a one-liner to patch in. Thx.

    What's new in 4.4.5?

    Minor releases are almost always just maintenance releases. We gather up a fistful of bug reports and fix them to ensure that every month or so, our clients enjoy more stability and efficiency with Invision Community. However, more recently we've noticed that we're running low on bug reports, so we've managed to squeeze in a handful of improvements in Invision Community 4.4.5. Let's take a look and see what's new in Pages. How should the canonical tag behave? While this isn't the most exciting name for a feature, it does explain it reasonably well. We had a recent discussion on the forums where it was pointed out that the canonical tag directed search engines to the first page of any record. While this makes perfect sense for an articles or blog system where the content you create is more important than the comments, it makes less sense if the user-generated content (aka the comments) is more important than the content you put up. A good example here is where you put up a video or link for review. You don't want the canonical tag pointing to the first page as it will ignore the reviews themselves. If you didn't understand much of that, don't worry. The idea behind this feature is to provide Google and friends with a better hint about which content is more important. A happier Google bot slurping your site is a good thing. How about that Admin CP menu? When you create a new database in Pages, it is shown in the ACP menu under 'Content'. This is fine, but when you get a lot of databases, it starts looking a little cluttered, and it can be hard to find the correct one. We've reworked the menu so items have their own section, and can be re-ordered using the ACP menu re-ordering system. Member fields are now filterable. Pages allows specific field types to be filterable. This means you can sort by them with the table's advanced search box, and you can drag and drop a filters widget next to the table to refine the rows shown. Now a member custom field is filterable, which is handy if you use them in your databases. Other areas of the suite. Messenger search A while back, we made a change that removed the ability to search messenger by the sender or recipient name. We also limited the reach of the search system to one year and newer. Unsurprisingly, this wasn't very popular. We've restored sender, and recipient name searching removed the one year limit and re-engineered the internals of search, so it's more efficient and returns results much faster. How many members do you have? You can see quite quickly if you have the member stats widget on the front end, but finding out via the Admin CP is a little more tricky. Until now! We've added a dashboard widget that not only shows the number of members you have registered, but also a break down of their email opt-in status. A happier autocomplete. Apple has this cool feature where if you receive a text message for a two-factor authentication login, it offers to auto-fill the code box for you. We've had a sweep throughout the suite to ensure two-factor authentication fields allow this autocomplete to happen. While we were at it, we made sure that other fields are more easily autocompleted.   3. As an example. Best practices are not to preload all css stylesheets, only key ones. There are numerous articles and guides written by the likes of google out there which refer to this, I've linked one or two in this thread. The same applies to putting css at the bottom of the page, it's just not recommended. It may score well on a speed test, but it's horrible for user experience, especially on slower connections. Testing on a live site and declaring success as getting a better score on a page speed type test is also not a good thing to do as these tests while a useful guide, are in many respects irrelevant. If you want to follow best practices you need to split test and get real user data (both speed and browsing information, such as bounce rate, time on the page etc), so you can compare your experiment vs your existing setup. Only at that point is it possible to get a true picture as to the differences your changes are making.

    Bulk email speed

    Unfortunately that will not do what @Philooo is looking for. That constant is for reducing the amount of emails done per batch, but doesn't control how frequently batches are done (each task run does as many batches as it can before timing out) - if you reduce it, it will just run more batches in the same amount of time. All of the constants are explained in init.php: // Maximum number of emails per batch // Note: changing this will have very little practical effect because the batches will just // get processed quicker - turning it down won't allow you to workaround server limitation // about how many emails can get sent. I have figured out that there is no meta description for the links with /page/XXX at the end topics http://www.example.com/forums/topic/17589-whatever/page/XXX article comments http://www.example.com/articles/category/article/page/XXX blog entry http://www.example.com/blogs/entry/17589-whatever/page/XXX and so on I have lot of pages where Sign in... and menu structure is taken into description by Google instead of the content of the page. It looks messy in search results and does not attract users to click.

  10. Collecting, curating and organising ideas and feedback is a critical part of managing a community for a product. Even though here at Invision Community, we have a relaxed approach to ideation, we do read and review ideas and feature requests that come into us via our support community and via emails and tickets and organise them off-site. If you wanted to add more rigour to your ideation process, then Invision Community has built-in tools that you can use. This video covers setting up a "Question & Answer" forum, which forms the basis for your ideation section along with using the built-in translation tools to tweak the interface language. The complete process takes around five minutes and is the perfect way to collect and organise community ideas. Once you have it set up, your community members can post their ideas and fellow community members can upvote their favourite suggestions, leave comments on ideas and even upvote and downvote replies inside the idea. Ask your host to (temporarily) enable MySQL slow query logging, then after they've confirmed it is enabled visit your unread content stream to trigger the issue (and capture the query that is being ran), and then you can ask your host to shut off slow query logging. With the logged query/queries, submit a ticket.

  15. No, you haven't. Search engines do not require a meta description tag in order to index a page - they never have, and over the years have only de-emphasized the importance of this tag, not relied upon it more heavily. Now, of course, it's possible that topics are not being indexed but should be in random cases and we can take a look at that, but I can unequivocally tell you that it is not because there isn't a meta description tag on the second page of a topic. We can take a look - thanks for bringing this up. 🙂

    Well, it’s called the community suite and everything in that product revolves around the memberships. It’s not IPS’ job to save us money for other products. That raffle problem is easy to solve. Just collect a username along with the email (or assign one yourself) and then you can user the existing member import feature. You can even put those members in a certain user group so they can be addressed directly. This makes more sense than to add a new member table of just email users to the database.

  23. I’m sorry to hear that you’re frustrated. With thousands of customers across the globe, we try our very best to provide the stellar support that is consistent with our 17yr+ reputation while still maintaining an efficient workflow. Like most companies, we admittedly don’t always hit the mark and when such occurrences are due to a breakdown on our side, we do our best to make it right. With that said, your comments about support and the product are a bit confusing. You’ve submitted 4 tickets this year (not including the “your support sucks” ticket - which we will gloss over as I know emotions can run high.) All tickets were promptly answered - one within 30 minutes. Another within 12 hours - on a weekend. Another submitted on Saturday evening was addressed first thing Monday morning. I’m unable to find any indication that you’ve actually experienced any technical issues that are due to software “faults” based on your ticket history. One ticket was related to branding removal, two were due to third party customizations which, when you said you removed/reinstalled, resolved the issue and finally, the other that seemed to push you over the proverbial edge was our inability to help you change HTTP status codes and customize your server-side error messages, via a support ticket. Your latest issue you’ve posted about elsewhere, but haven’t brought up in a ticket, suggests you may have a rewrite issue. I realize you didn’t get the outcome you were looking for and you have an expectation that we should provide third party / customization support. In a perfect world, we would have the luxury of being everything to everyone, but unfortunately, our product support team are not developers and unfortunately, traversing server systems, debugging code we didn’t write (third party plugins/apps) and pinpointing line numbers to change code for HTTP status codes is simply not a reasonable expectation of base/included support. It’s always disheartening to disappoint a customer and it’s something we take seriously, however, sometimes expectations don’t always fall in line with what can reasonably be provided. Finally, while I have never subscribed to the customer is always right philosophy. I do firmly believe in approaching every service issue individually, ensuring I understand the customer concerns, reviewing the background and identifying where the breakdown occurred. With me personally, approach is everything and as a consumer, I practice what I preach. If my Internet service goes down, I do not call Comcast and berate the agent for I know it is not their fault personally and I find people are much more receptive to a calm, respectful exchange vs rants and insults — treat others like you wish to be treated. Likewise, if a customer approaches and says “I know things happen, but I’m having this issue and not getting anywhere. Can you please help?” I personally guarantee the results will be far more favorable than “you guys suck”, “this is a _____ joke”, “I’m going to sue you”, “I’m starting a social media campaign against you.” The latter will never yield any positive results here. We prefer positive relationships with mutual respect and courtesy; we’re all on the same side and your success is our success. If you’re ever unhappy with a support interaction, please ask for it to be escalated. At this point, I suggest taking a couple of days and then I would absolutely welcome you to contact me personally for further discussion — in hopes of “rebooting” and working towards more positive interactions.   26. Be sure, that there is a limit for the tests you can perform per day. After the limit is exceeded you will get and error that your resources are blocked by robots.txt (even if they are not). In this case it is a kind of generic error. I have spent days to figure it out. You can also find confirmation for this behavior on Google webmaster forums. Unfortunately Google does not care about correct error in this case (quota exceeded) and you can spend a lot time trying to figure out what these errors mean.

  28. I just can't understand it. 🙄 Opting to limit the amount of content in the email should surely be an option out of the box, especially when we're already battling the blight of social media. The "You might also be interested in" section of the email is truncated with the intention of driving engagement activity back to the site.

  29. To make this complete we need to be able to have an email list signup and the ability to import email addresses, without a full forum account. For example, if we go to a conference and have a business card raffle, all email addresses on those cards get entered into our database. They aren't forum accounts, but they are still valuable leads we would like to send mail to. If you are trying to sell someone something it is easier to get them to enter their email address and press submit than it is to create a forum account. It's all about the customer acquisition funnel. We would save $2000 a year if you can make this replace MailChimp.

    Great news! It would be nice to have built-in option to trim post content in notification emails. Firstly, it would be better for community, because if someone have to click link to read the content there is much bigger chance that he will reply in this topic (because he is reading post on forum not in mail). What's more, currently the mail with notification about really long post look awful (especially when there is some program listing in post content ex. on forum for programmers).

    If I knew that this Application was plastered with the developers copyright notice and domain name, then I would never have purchased this application in the first place. I have no issues with copyright notices, if the script's are open source and free as I believe in giving something back (long time open source developer). But, I am certainly not going to pay to advertise your domain on my site just to help your Google ratings, sorry.
