    How I started my community

I'm only one month in to starting a new community and I've already learned a huge amount. I was a little apprehensive at first but I'm taking things one step at a time and I'm happy with how things are going so far. The points I'm going to raise are working for me but I'm a beginner and running a website of any description is new. Nothing here is guaranteed and I hope to receive comments from established community admins so I can continue to improve. The first thing I realised is that I wasn't actually starting a community but instead I'm going to be bringing new tools and ideas to an already existing one. My chosen subject is broad (Dogs) so there is already a well established real life community globally. My aim therefore is not to replicate already available content but to reach this community with unique content and encourage them to contribute their own. More on that later but before I could do that I needed something they could visit. The new community site Get Started You can spend days and weeks planning and writing business plans and these are all good things to do alongside everything else but they shouldn't stop you getting started. The only thing that really mattered to me was starting on the actual idea and to do that all I needed was a platform. You've probably already guessed but Invision Community was chosen for this as it offered multiple apps that would allow me to have both long form articles and forum content. There's also the monetisation options that appealed to me but I am not yet using. It's good to know they are there when I'm ready though. I also considered Wordpress but it lacked the community tools I was already sold on. Rope in friends and family and use their skill sets I'm not scared to admit where I need help and as I have hit problems or things I don't know I have called in favours. I don't have a large budget for stock photography subscriptions so a friend is providing photos in exchange for attribution. My fiance is more technically minded so he has helped with some of the set up and help with Invision Community features is only a support ticket away. There is plenty of general information a quick web search away too but some topics are complex and I thought that if I could free up at least some of my time I can keep focussed on the direction. Help can be as simple as nudging friends into posting new topics or comments to get some initial activity and momentum. It's also a good test to make sure you have everything set up with your registration process and identify some potential problems. These helpers are also now active members of the site of course so it's a two for one. I'm sure they'll be calling in return favours at some point but that's fine, they've earned it. Encourage all contributions even if you don't agree with them Coming from a primary school teaching background I see kids come up with lots of crazy and novel ideas all the time, they might sound silly but you never know, they may grow into something bigger. My aim is to foster a sense of community and belonging and people of all ages who have their ideas valued tend to stick around. If an idea doesn't work that's fine but you never know what will work so I'm trying lots of things and encouraging innovation. The forums are a great tool for this as everything doesn't need to be rigidly structured. Be passionate and confident about your subject matter Perhaps my top tip…If you don't value your own thoughts and actions then how can you expect others to? Show your enthusiasm and knock away negative thoughts and doubts. Use all of your tools Once you've encouraged your initial core group of members, you need to keep them coming back. So far I've had success using the bulk mail feature for a monthly newsletter to rekindle the interest of early members who may no longer be as active. I was warned about bad email practices so I have our notification defaults set very loosely as I want to build trust by not spamming. Everything I send is opt-in and using the newsletter signup block I've been able to make this prominent but not obtrusive. I'm worried I might be missing out by not being aggressive enough with email but it's a risk I'm taking to hopefully get better long term members. Get involved with your member activities and conversations Join in with conversations on your community where it makes sense and be as active as possible. You're running a website but to do so you don't always need to be in front of a computer. Speak to your members face to face as well as through the keyboard. I've been going on local dog walks with clubs and other community groups which is a great chance to network and give your members and potential members the chance to see the people behind the website. If there are events or shows in your field get involved and spread the word verbally. I'm talking to dog owners face to face about behavioural issues and always in the back of my mind is the fact this could be discussed on the website to help others and build activity. Over time these "real world" relationships should also be represented on the website too. Don't get distracted I've got into the habit of using a reminders app to keep track of future things I want to do. It is tempting to start lots of things every time you have a new idea but that can take your mind off what is actually important right now. Don't forget about these ideas though, make a note and come back to them later. Approvals and applications for things can also take time. I found myself sometimes sitting around waiting for adsense accounts to be approved or Facebook apps to be verified for sign in. Don't let this downtime be unproductive. Keep writing new content What we have started as new community admins isn't easy, it's going to be a long haul so you need to be consistent and regular with updates. On that note I have a breed profile about Chow Chows to write. Thanks for listening to my ramblings and if you have any more tips please let me know in the comments. Helen is a year 3 international primary school teacher currently living in Slovakia. She loves dogs (of course), books, and reading whenever possible. Toggle off newsletter widget

Every now and again I visit a page that I haven't had a reason to visit before and WHAM there it is again, an invitation to sign up to a non-existent newsletter. On comes the Block Manager, away goes the widget. Until the next time I spot it on another page that I've not visited before. Would it be possible to toggle this to off in a future version to prevent those of us who don't and won't have a newsletter having to visit every page of the site to manually remove the block and have to answer questions from users about this newsletter that they've signed up for and not received, please?

True, but it’s a ball ache creating a dark theme, the editor in particular. I must have started one at least 5 times and gave up as there’s so many areas and pages fearing that by time I finished 5.0 would be released. How many customers don’t feel comfortable using web inspect and creating a custom.css file so end up using the default theme with a logo uploaded? Fair few I would imagine. IPS are really missing a trick not bundling in a Night Mode in the package and using it as a selling point, would it take those that created the templates that long to create one? A day or two maybe, being generous allowing for coffee and toilet breaks. Twitter has by far the best night mode on any site, the dark blue would be a nice alternative to the default IPS white and blue theme.

I actually do have a plan. I have 3 active communities and in the safe at home with other important papers is instructions for the wife to give to one of my admins who is on all 3 sites and is a good friend and lives a few hours away. It contains all my info (email, passwords, etc..) so that he can then access my account here and on all the sites to do what is needed. He'll have a bit of a learning curve as he has not dealt with everything but since all is up and running should be ok. And if its not ok what do I care, I'll be dead

Generate Zip archives from IP.Downloads and IP.Gallery on the fly! Important: Please fully read everything here before purchasing or installing this application. Most importantly, make sure you aware of the limitations outlined bellow. Bulk / Zip Downloader is an application that allows IPS to generate dynamic Zip archives on-demand, providing your members with the ability to download entire gallery albums and IP.Downloads file submissions at once. Please be aware that this can be a very memory intensive application, notably if you are using the Native PHP transfer method with IP.Downloaods. With IP.Gallery, the application is relatively safe to use on most hosting environments, but caution must be used when enabling use with IP.Downloads. If you are on a self-hosted environment and are utilizing Nginx, you can use the mod_zip extension instead of Native PHP. This provides significantly better performance and, unlike with PHP, has a very low memory footprint. Features IP.Gallery (albums) support IP.Downloads (files) support Group based permissions Custom error messages Nginx mod_zip support Limitations When using the Native PHP implementation (required if you use Apache), please be sure your PHP memory limit can support at least 3x your communities configured upload limit plus ~100MB (for the core IPS application). This means if your maximum upload size is set to 100MB, your memory PHP limit should be configured to at least 400MB. I am currently working on optimizing this to reduce the requirement to roughly 2x instead of 3x, but please be sure your server can handle the applications memory requirements before use. mod_zip and mod_pagespeed can currently not be used in conjunction with one another. Pagespeed must be disabled using "Pagespeed off", otherwise mod_zip requests will return as aborted. Unfortunately, this happens even if you attempt to use "pagespeed Disallow" on the application. Demo To ensure your server is capable of running this application, a free demo can be installed, allowing you to run test downloads from the AdminCP of your IPS community. bulkdldemo.tar You can find the tests page under "Zip Downloads" in the Community tab of your AdminCP. After testing, remember to uninstall the demo before installing the full application!

We want to ensure that converting from your existing community platform to ours is as seamless as possible. While we do have a migration service available where we take care of everything for you, we do also offer a DIY option. We took some time to overhaul the conversion process for those opting to convert using our free tools. Ready to convert? So you've just purchased your first copy of Invision Community, and you're ready to convert your existing site over from another software package. Great! We're glad you've made the decision to take your community to the next level! You've already checked out our Migrations page, confirmed the software you wish to convert from is supported, and you're confident in your ability to work through the process. You install the Converters package and you're ready to go. Lets get started! We have overhauled the converters to simplify the process. Beginning with 4.4, you will take the following steps to convert from another software package: Rather than choose the application you wish to convert first, you will now choose what software you are converting from, which is a much more logical start to a conversion. Next, you will supply the database details for your source database (the database you wish to convert into your new Invision Community). Then, you will see a list of all applications that can be converted for the software package you are converting from. If any applications cannot be converted (perhaps because you were not previously using the corresponding application in your source software), a message will be shown indicating there is nothing to convert. If any steps require additional configuration, you will be able to specify those details here. And finally, when you submit that form - that's it! You're done, and you can sit back and let the conversion process on its own. Each step for each application will be completed automatically, and the conversion will be finalized automatically at the end. A progress bar will be shown, along with a textual indicator that outlines exactly what is being converted. What does it look like? conversion.mp4 Here's a quick video to illustrate the new conversion process. The system even remembers where you were at and automatically picks back up where you left off. Closing your browser, losing internet connectivity, or some other unforeseen issue won't stop you dead in your tracks and force you to start all over again. We hope that these updates make it even easier to switch from another community platform.

    How I started my community

Congratulations on the launch! It's exciting to see another community start up, especially for such a fun topic as dogs. I appreciate the personal reflection and insights you share based on your background as a primary school teacher. Those skills can translate very well into a community manager. You offer some solid advice on encouraging all feedback, bulk mails, keeping track of your activities, asking for help, and being passionate. We look forward to more doggy updates!

Yes, if you remove that permission globally for moderators who you don't want to be able to approve files, then add it in the individual areas except for Downloads (e.g. let them hide/unhide topics, posts, blog entries, etc.) then they will be able to approve content everywhere but in Downloads.

Members Shop ( Support Topic )

Your recent update to the membershop (1.1.6) has fixed this problem, and has fixed all the issues I had with it, except for items appearing on the index page of the shop. But that's okay, I just changed the link to take it to the category instead, and the redirect issue is fixed. However this issue still exists with the lottery modification; so what ever you did here could potentially fix that problem too. :) Great work man!

I'm personally mixed on your dark mode suggestion ... but not because I wouldn't want a dark mode. In fact, on my smartphone I use a blue light filter and switch to dark mode for many apps. I love dark mode to ease the strain on my eyes. Keep in mind that for all of your examples of dark mode, the developer controls one user experience for all users. For IPS communities, however, individual communities can develop and customize the theming to their hearts content, and that can include any variations like regular or dark mode. Will IPS earn major street cred for coming out with dark mode? Yes. But is it something they need to do or should it be left up to the themers? That's a little more nuanced.

    Menu Groups Manager

    Version 1.1.2

Menu Groups Manager, is a spiritual successor to CJ Menu. This menu manager offers a wide range of abilities and features, not found in the default IPS menu manager. You will have the ability to create unlimited groups, use them in a widget, hooks or in one of the 5 predefined locations. Note: if you are a CJ Menu owner, you can claim for a limited time a free copy of MGM, please contact me . Features: Multiple menu groups Several menu types to choose from (drawer, URL, applications, wrapper and magic block) multi-tiered sub menus two sub menus types: traditonal and mega On IPS applications that support Categories (like forums and downloads) have the ability to attach these Categories as sub menus. (this feature can be extended to third parties apps thru MGM's extension, several 3rd parties apps already support, Babble, Downloads Plus out of the box). Optional replacement of IPS default menu*. custom permissions or use application permissions. custom icons or use of font awesome icons for menus. Magic Blocks: allows you to create customized submenus, allows use of HTML/IPS Template logic/PHP/Javascript/etc. the only real limit is the imagination going into it. minimal style: the style is made to look acceptable on the IPS default them, but the styling is kept to minimal for easier styling into any theme. * MGM will attempt to remove the IPS default menu navigation, this isn't always a guarantee due to difference in theme design, as long as the them is similar to the default theme in the menu area, this feature should work, refunds will not be issued based on this reason alone, if the theme is incompatible with this feature. I do offer additional paid support for this, please inquire in PM if you desire this. limited theme support is available (as i am not a themer, i can help to the best of my ability).

Maybe there is the ability to do this, but I haven't found this in the settings... On the product page in commerce, if you only have 1 image for your product, there should be a way to not show the little thumbnail below the product image and only show it if there are 2 or more images. Seems like a waste of space and users click on it thinking something will change. I am not a fan of how the product description text is truncated and that should be an option. Then you have the about section below which is duplicating it. I understand why if you have huge details about the product, but if you are selling something with not that much of a description, it's redundant. There are no product blocks or the ability to create a block product feed within pages. Seems that's missing and could be used all over the place. if I'm missing how to get this done, please share. Thanks.
