  1. Yet again, Joel hijacks our company blog for another generous slice of knowledge from the front-lines of administrating a successful community. Inspired by Invision Community client @Joey_M who discovered the emoji of serendipity and chief architect @Matt who literally knows everything about Invision Community in ACP Tips and Tricks, they both made me realize there’s always something to learn no matter your level of experience. You know how to post. You know how to react. You sometimes spice it up and make a poll. And for the most part, you and your users go about your forum lives with a secure sense of certainty and satisfaction that you know how to interact with your community. But what if I told you there’s a whole world of wonder at your fingertips, young grasshopper? Your Invision Community includes stars to navigate by; magical pictures that appear and disappear; and little yellow men who giggle, laugh, and sometimes roll over in delight. Here are 5 hidden tips to help you discover a little more of the IPS magic for you and your users. How do you know what you don’t know? 1. Click-and-hold Be sure to dazzle your users with this secret way of changing your content title. Change titles of your content items such as topic titles, album titles, and download files by using the click-and-hold strategy. Go to your forums and click-and-hold down the mouse over any topic title until you see that you’re able to edit the title. Surprise! Use this secret strategy as the perfect way to quickly mass edit titles. Click-and-impress your users with the click-and-hold strategy 2. Stars and Dots Active forum users jump around dozens of boards every day to stay involved. And within a loooong topic with many pages, you need a fast way to jump to the most recent unread topic. Before each topic is an icon: either a dot or a star. Clicking these icons will always jump you to the latest unread post, so you can quickly dive back into the conversation. Dot means unread; Star means you participated in the topic. My forum icon constellation tells me that I’m most compatible with a Capricorn. 3. Emoji Short-codes One of the newest features to be included in Invision Community is emojis. While there are ways to insert emojis from both mobile keyboards and the editor, you can also start typing “:thumbs up:” to reveal the secret emoji menu. Try it now in the comments of this article. Last person to give me an emoji thumbs up wins! Be a 💯 with 🙂 4. Image Attachments Forum posts come alive with image attachments that add color and vibrancy. But adding thumbnails to the bottom of your posts is a missed opportunity to enrich your post at the appropriate spots within the post. After you upload an image attachment to a forum post, double-click on the image attachment. You’ll be presented with a secret menu with options to align and resize, so you can create stunning forum posts with images. Much color. Much alignment. So much wow. 5. Profile Banners Banners play a prominent part in multiple parts of the community, such as the Calendar, Profile, Clubs, and Blogs. But usually the page only displays a portion of the banner, and most of the banner is hidden. If you ever want to see the full banner in all of its glory, click near the top of the banner to auto-magically reveal everything! Now you see, now you don’t. The iceberg is a metaphor How many of these five secret tips did you know? If you knew all five, give yourself a round of applause! It’s rare for even the most seasoned Invision Community administrator to know all five, and you’ve mastered them all. Did you know four? Congrats, you’ve done a great job of exploring your community suite and you should keep it up. Did you know three or less? You should do some serious soul searching. Kidding. But it’s a definite sign that your soul would benefit from reading Invision Community News for more useful tips. Becoming a great community manager is a combination of community strategy and product knowledge. By empowering yourself with more functional knowledge and tools, you’re giving yourself the ability to leverage a bigger toolkit. Whether you’re typing emoji short-codes to laugh with your members or inserting attachments into a tutorial on hidden tips for your community, I hope you learned something new, something surprising, and something perhaps even a little wonderful. Let us know in the comments below what hidden tip surprised you the most.

  2. Blocks all have a unique 'blockid' attribute, which you can use in CSS to target that block. For example: [data-blockid="app_gallery_albums_lqslwgew6"] { background: red; } You can find that ID by using web inspector to select the block on the page and looking at the DOM. That line above matches a specific block; if you have multiple blocks of the same type, you could target them all by doing (note the ^=) [data-blockid^="app_gallery_albums_"] { background: blue; }

    Simply one of the best apps in the marketplace with many possibilities beyond a simple company directory. This has allowed me to add a features to my site that my members (and non members) have been wanting for years. Spanners support has been fantastic throughout the long developmental process. My use of the app is to create an online database of tip sites for free wood chips and timber in the UK. https://arbtalk.co.uk/recycling

  5. #3 I didn't know. In a perfect IPS world there shouldn't be "secret" tips. They should be known by all. It is really great to have many features but if the users are not aware of them something is wrong with the UI. There should be an inbuilt interactive help/tipp system that explains all features and functions. Nevertheless, thanks for this article, I highly appreciate it.

  6. Just to be clear, the SVG mention in the blog entry relates specifically to the Safari Mask Icon, not the theme header/logo. A custom theme can add custom theme options, including the ability to upload an SVG logo.

    Requires IPS Gallery. By default, albums in IPS Gallery are set to only be editable and contributed to by the owner of the album. Even if users have moderation abilities for a gallery category, or even if you're the top admin, by default you can't add to an album that is owned by someone else. This plugin removes this per album setting, and sets all new or edited albums to be "public", ie. anyone with permission to upload to the gallery category can now edit and contribute to all of the albums within that category.

    (1.)2.0 is here, no idea why we jumped to far but why not! http://area-games.ro/demo Demo account: Username: test, password: test Please pay attention to the ACP instruction while working with the slider! For the slider we chose let your work with JSON to allow you to add as many slides as you want! This is a example of JSON for your slider: { "Crankchips": { "text": "This is v1.0", "button": { "text": "Check this out!", "link": "https:\/\/www.puffysticks.com\/" } }, "Crankchips v2.0": { "text": "This is v2.0" } } This is a example of JSON code for a slider with 2 slides. The objects inside the first (main) json ( defined by an opened curly bracket => { ) must have this specific form: "Crankchips": { "text": "This is v1.0", "button": { "text": "Check this out!", "link": "https:\/\/www.puffysticks.com\/" } } "Crankchips": { "text": "This is v1.0", "button": { "text": "Check this out!", "link": "https:\/\/www.puffysticks.com\/" } } Where "Crankychips" is the title of the slide, and the object after the colon ( : ) are the properties of the slide, the first property is "text" which represents the content of your slide, the second property ( which is also an object ) is "button" which has properties too, those being "text" ( again but as property of the "button" object ) which represents the button text on which users will click to read more about your slide and the "link" property which represents the link where the users will be sent to when clicking the button. The title and property of every slide should be passed through an online JSON escape tool like this one! If you are one of the first 10 buyers contact us about a freebie. It's free!

  11. Who remembers the earlier days of the internet? Back when you popped your logo at the top left of your site and you were largely done? Invision Community has continually developed to account for all the new services that have been built during our 16 years. We now have social media sharing images, favicons and more to consider. Invision Community 4.4 also adds mobile application icons, Safari mask icons and data for an application manifest. Handling of these logos and icons was a prime candidate for improvement in 4.4. Moving our current options Step one for improving our handling of these images was to move our current options out of themes and to allow them to be managed suite-wide from a single area. You can still upload a logo image per-theme (which shows in the header area), but the rest of the options have now been relocated to a new area: Customization > Appearance > Icons & Logos. Adding new options After giving favicon and share logo management its own dedicated area, we took a look at enhancing the configuration options made available through the interface without requiring theme template edits. Multiple share logos You can now upload multiple share logos. If you elect to upload more than one share logo, Facebook and similar sites will generally either show a carousel to allow you to choose which logo to use when sharing, or simply use the first image referenced. Application icons You can now upload an image to represent your website which will be used to generate the "home screen" icons for iPhones and Androids automatically. Uploading a single image will result in several different copies of the image (in different dimensions) being generated, and mobile devices will automatically choose the best option from the list as needed. Safari mask icon You can also now upload a Safari Mask icon, which is used to represent your website in certain areas on Apple computers (such as on the "touchbar" of certain keyboards). This image must be an SVG image with a transparent background, and all vectors must be 100% black. Additionally, you can specify the mask color which is used to offset your image when necessary (e.g. to represent it as "selected" or "active"). Application manifest In order for devices to support the application icons that you upload, a file known as a web manifest must be generated and delivered to the browser. This now happens automatically, using details and icons specified in the AdminCP. Certain details, however, can be configured explicitly from the Icons & Logos page: Short name This is a short name to represent your site in areas with limited screen space, such as below your application icon on a mobile phone home screen. Site name This is the name of the site. The "Website name" setting is automatically used if you do not explicitly override it when configuring the manifest. Description A short description of your site Theme color You can choose a (single) color to represent the general theme of the site. This color may be used by devices in areas such as the address bar background. Background color You can also choose a (single) color to use as the background color for your site when the application is launched from a shortcut saved to the user's device home screen. Display mode Finally, you can specify the display mode your site should launch in. For our more astute designers and developers, you may have already realized that generating the manifest file lays the groundwork for future PWA (Progressive Web App) development and support. Additionally, some Android devices will automatically prompt users to add your website to their home screen now that a manifest file is generated by the site. Oh, and for the sake of completeness, we also generate the special browserconfig.xml file that Microsoft products (including Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, X-Box, and Microsoft-based mobile devices) look for when pinning sites and generating live tiles. There are no additional configuration options for this file - everything is automatically generated from the aforementioned options. The end result? Your community can now better convey, automatically, certain details to the myriad of devices out there that may be accessing your site, and you now have much better control over those details. You can more easily fine-tune the "little things" that help paint a complete picture of your web presence, and the groundwork has been laid for bigger and better things in the future as standardization and adoption of PWA functionality improves. This blog is part of our series introducing new features for Invision Community 4.4.

  12. Hi. So Emoji in 4.3 is a great feature, however, the number of icons are to much. Many of these icons will not be used at all and some don't display correctly. It would be useful to choose Emoji categories to display. @bfarber

    Allowed File Types

    With a simple comma. 🙂 Here's a quick pic of how it looks if you enter just jpg, jpeg , note as you enter the , it turns them into what (appears) to look like tags. Note: Don't enter the leading . for the extension, just type them in like jpg, jpeg, txt, png, etc etc as you require! And here is what it looks like if you try to upload something else, I tried to add a .txt and a .png! Final note: This does not mean if they picked a few to upload at once, it would reject them all. Sensibly (thankfully!) it will simply upload the valid/acceptable ones and then show that modal popup , informing the user of acceptable types, so they won't have to sift through them as such and "try again" 🙂

  14. Hi, I have been a PayPal user for many years, one day they decided to limit me permanently after using them for years straight - I was even a business account that had my own phone line, where I'd get my personal support. Problem with IPS Marketplace, is that it requires you to login to your PayPal account to purchase products. This really sucks, for people like me. People that don't want to give all their information out to PayPal, or don't are simply permanently limited are not able to purchase anything from the marketplace. Can you guys please enable guest checkout on PayPal? Perhaps even add another option like Stripe. It is really unfair that there is only one option, and that requires a third party account. PayPal is notorious for limiting sellers.

    You can submit a ticket in Client Area if you’re not getting response. But I strongly DO NOT recommend to do that. Complain via IPS only. I’ve seen licenses been terminated due to chargebacks.

    Yes but every payment uses IPS payment system and if you complain to Ips staff they will listen if more complains. You have allso 180 days to complain to PayPal and get your money back. If that happend IPS will get a lot of complain and probably have to talk to the owner.

    REMOVE QUOTE

    I find it ironic I'm quoting you here to give you advice on how to remove the quote button. 😛 1) To edit your theme you visit AdminCP > Customization > Themes, then you click the </> icon next to your theme. You then choose the template to edit, and from there it's mostly HTML with some variables and "HTML logic" to support looping and things like that. 2) For each tab (Large, Medium and Small) you drag the quote button to the "Buttons not on editor" toolbar at the bottom. You can also double click the button to adjust its permissions.

  21. I don’t like this at all. Even if the link is broken, I still might want to visit the site and get information from the error page or by changing the URL or by browsing the site to find moved content for example. But on the forum you show, I can’t even copy and paste the URL since it is cut off. I also wonder how this is done technically. I doubt this is a live check. This would slow down the page loading significantly. If it is cached, then it could report URLs as broken, even if they came back online after it was checked.

  28. I didn't create this image, so it's probably not the exact color you're inquiring about, but this gives you an idea of how it works: Here's an example of how the theme color may affect a device. Keep in mind that it is up to individual consumers (devices/user agents) how they will use these elements: https://developers.google.com/web/updates/2015/08/using-manifest-to-set-sitewide-theme-color The background color is generally used as the background/splash screen color when launching your site from a saved home screen icon. https://developers.google.com/web/fundamentals/web-app-manifest/#splash-screen Remember that each device can decide which elements it will read and support from the manifest, and how it will use those elements. The Safari mask icon is a very specific element which requires an SVG. This image is not used anywhere else presently, except for the Safari mask icon. It's not so much about making it "Apple-only", but rather using an SVG here is a requirement of using the feature in general. https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/AppleApplications/Reference/SafariWebContent/pinnedTabs/pinnedTabs.html As the Blog notes, we create Microsoft's special "browserconfig.xml" file to better support Windows-based devices as well. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dn320426(v=vs.60) It's interesting to note that we can build off of this functionality to better support Windows Live Tiles (where you get live updates of a site right in your start menu, or on your home screen for devices with more enhanced live tile support (XBox for instance).

    With all due respect, but if you guys told us that you would be introducing a media manager where we could reuse images for articles etc, then I would be inclined to get a bit more excited. God knows how much server space I have wasted uploading the same images over and over again, when I could have uploaded it once and reused it over and over again.

  32. If I could make a suggestion.... If you click on a forum, while in fluid view, don't update the fluid view filter causing you to lose all your previous forum selection settings. Can you instead redirect to that specific forum and jump out of fluid view? Or just not update the fluid view filter? Just because I want to see what topics are in say IPS Development Gateway right now doesn't mean I want to have to reset / reselect all of the forums I want to see in fluid view on a daily basis. Sure, I can click forum view, then select the IPS Development Gateway, but that's not as intuitive.
