  1. Honestly, I don't see any sense in doing this. You require us to inform a file name when creating a hook and when you install it, it goes away: I have nothing else to do but enter in each of those files to find the one I want to edit! You already stopped renaming the plugin folder, that's a HUGE step forward. Now please, stop renaming file names too. EDIT: other situation: sometimes we need to support a client and very often make some quick change in a hook while we don't release a new version. How to do that ? I don't know which file to edit!

  2. I know as an end-user on various communities, I have a reasonable belief that a site I belong to is taking appropriate steps to safeguard my information and contributions. Sure, things happen and we all know that... but if I, as a user, was aware that you, as an admin, were literally going out of your way to ignore critical notices from the software manufacturer because the warning annoyed you or you didn't feel like maintaining the software -- I'd be less than thrilled. Thank you for the feedback. In this case, we're not interested in making changes to the critical notice system or entertaining further discussion on making it dismissible outside of updating.

  3. I've just mentioned this twice in other topics with reference to the activity streams and search functions, but I'm sticking it up separately as I really do think it's important. The use of the reputation system in content discovery seems to be zero. Here we are, our members telling us 'this is a good post' - and we don't seem to be able to use that info. Right off the top of my head here are some ways we could be using that information: 1) Show me posts with 10 or more likes - instantly you're getting a 'best of the board' feed 2) Search for posts in topics with '4.1 upgrade failed', rank by likes - you get solutions or explanations of the problem 3) Show me posts by users with over 1,000 likes - find out what our most valuable users are saying 4) Blocks of most popular posts over the last 7/28/365 days - showcase to new members of our best content; stuff to highlight in the newsletter 5) Show me my highest rated posts - the ultimate ego-search. What do people love most about you? 6) People who liked this post also liked... 7) Loads of others, I bet I find it remarkable that the time was taken to let us filter by number of replies or views, but not by how GOOD something has been judged to be. Major missed opportunity, IMHO. Now, it is traditional at this point for someone to point out that actually all of these things are possible, I just haven't noticed how. Do go ahead...

  4. With v4, when editing a user group there is a setting "Can delete own content?" which allows them to globally delete anything and everything of their's on the forum. It's no longer possible to configure what they can specifically delete, ie: posts vs topics, gallery albums/images, etc. In the particular case with our forum, we want users to simply be able to manage their own galleries. Regularly images are uploaded by accident, duplicate uploads, etc. users need to contact a moderator in order to have their images deleted. Because we don't want to allow them to delete their forum topics/posts. Is there any way you allow us to define what users can delete again? It would be nice to delete posts vs topics, but at the very minimum users should be able to delete their own gallery content without being allowed to delete topics/posts. Content deletion/management options per application would be really nice. This seems like an oversight. Too many problems can arise if members can delete topics/posts, especially if they are angry/planning to leave the forum. They could end up deleting big productive topics from the forum. Thanks!

  5. Yes it is a bit strange how there is no indicator depicting anonymity. None the less, this is being worked on now as I wouldn't mind it myself

  6. At this point we are seriously considering converting forum software. We MUST allow members to hide or delete their gallery images as it just causes too much work otherwise. Our galleries are used like storybooks for users to showcase their work. But now certain members end up hiding or deleting their own topics/posts which we do not want them to do (if a topic starts to get heated, etc) - this is something that our moderators must do and we prefer to make examples out of problem topics instead of members handling it themselves. We really, really need users to delete or hide their own gallery images without it being applied globally to ALL their content.

  7. For my dev scripts, I just utilize a bit of a hackish way of re-importing the development resources on plugin installation. You can take a look at my Query Toolbox plugin on GitHub to get a general overview of how I do it, https://github.com/FujiMakoto/IPS-Query-Toolbox/blob/master/dev/setup/install.php It's basically just base64ing a tarball that contains your development resources (or any other libraries your plugin may need) and then extracting them on setup. It's a bit tedious to maintain, so I plan on writing a utility of some sort to do automate before building the plugin. I could post it here whenever I do get around to writing it if it'd be useful to you.

  8. this is one of the reasons why i don't do "plugins" for custom work anymore. lately i've just been creating applications, even if i don't need the "full" application abilities, just cause its a pain the butt to try to keep it in a "dev" environment if i ever need to do any work on it in the future. i use to have a script that would take a plugin and convert it back into a dev build, but it stopped working and just haven't gotten around to figure out why.

  9. Rules already does this with custom data fields. Just add a field to members and set the permissions on the field how you like!

  12. I'm grateful for the notification. It took me 5 minutes to perform a backup, a minute to take the site offline, 2 minutes to apply the update, 1 minute to pat myself on the back for a job well done, and another minute to put everything back online. Sometimes I think admins like to make a mountain out of a molehill.

    You really want to use the ajax progress bar as it is much faster than the full page refresh. The full page refresh only occurs if the client does not have JS enabled, or there is a JS error on the page.

  14. It only appears for yourself and other administrators, not for the users. Just ignore it until you find a suitable time to do it that won't cause any negative affect on your community. Overall downtime is generally less than 5 minutes anyway. It comes down to this - if you want your forum secure, and safe from the latest security exploits and very real and extreme risks that pose against your community. Hit the update button, it's there to save your community not to annoy you. Realistically the X should have a confirm popup "Ignoring this update voids any warranty or compensation that may otherwise of been considered if you updated" to reiterate the importance of a security update

  15. Hide own content is global too. Why is this? Definitely don't want to allow members to delete or hide globally. Deleting an image or gallery is pretty standard, but we don't want to enable it on forums. It should be up to admins if they delete blog entries as well, and blog posts. And records of their own as well as record posts. There should be permissions for each. I don't mind if they delete their blogs, that's their prerogative. But not discussions. Delete/Hide permissions needed per app and in app, content item or post, imo.

  16. Because we don't want you to dismiss critical notices. Standard update notices can be dismissed. Those that contain security updates cannot be dismissed without actually upgrading. We learned a lot with IP.Board -- including not being pushy enough about security updates... leading to your community to be compromised, you being angry, no backup and a 6 page support ticket. We try to allow as much flexibility as possible but we're not going to be flexible on pushing security updates -- critical updates will stay in your face until you update; that's the point... they're not "eh, I'll get that this weekend" kind of things. Your community getting compromised is not only an inconvenience to your users and a poor reflection on your community... it's also a poor reflection on us as the developers of the software. We do our part to protect you and with IPS4 - there's no room for "I didn't get a security notice from you by e-mail" or "not all of us login to our AdminCP every day" or "I didn't realize it was that serious." If you get the red box and can't dismiss it -- it's not a "when you feel like it" update. WAI. :)

  17. Right now IPS includes a rather large amount of JS and CSS on every page, and a decent amount of it could be combined into a single file and minified, as a best practice. It would be nice to have this happen automatically, or for IPS to include an ACP option to enable it.

  18. I would love it ( in fact I really need this) if we can give permissions on profile fields. For example in my case I have two distinct member types... business and non-business. The former will need a website URL but the latter ( non-business) should not be able to add a URL in their profile.

  21. I'd say that's the highest priority, could definitely use a better matrix (which 3.4 had) but deleting images is pretty standard and needed.

  22. +1 for @darmok1 In my opinion it's pretty standard that a user can delete his/her own pictures but not topics or even entries within the board.

    Error Upgraded 4.1.3.2

    Do you have a backup ? It might be wise to restore that then try the upgrade again. It cannot find a table, do you have Pages (IP.Content) ? What (core/board) version did you upgrade from ? It might be worth submitting a ticket in the Client Area. You have tried the 'Continue' button yes ?

  27. No. The concept would be to add a string field attached to members and set it to public access. Then for the input type choose url. Then simply set the permission on the field to allow only certain member groups to edit it. Done.

  29. In your custom.css file, Karen. Customization > Themes > click on the </> icon for the relevant theme > click on the tab CSS. From there navigate to core > front > custom > custom.css, which will already be visible after you click the tab CSS.

  30. I don't know. As I say I can see the value in expanding its scope of usefulness more. It could be done with a third party addon I guess looping though each via permission checks (not sure how resource hungry that would be though unless it was done carefully)

  32. Hello, I'm running community with math involved and I upgraded to IPS4 this morning (before was 3.6.x). I used mathjax before with almost no problem except with multi line tex. But with IPS4, I think I got several problem. It's okay to load any post page. But when I load the next page or other page in the same topic, it didn't load the math equation script. I don't know when I went wrong. I put mathjax script in the head of global. here's my global template ... <head> <title>{expression="output.getTitle( $title )"}</title> <!--[if lt IE 9]> {{foreach \IPS\Theme::i()->css( 'extra/ie8.css', 'core' ) as $css}}<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="{$css}">{{endforeach}} <script src="{url="applications/core/interface/html5shiv/html5shiv.js" base="none" protocol="\IPS\Http\Url::PROTOCOL_RELATIVE"}"></script> <![endif]--> {template="includeMeta" app="core" group="global" location="global" params=""} {template="includeMathJax" app="core" group="global" location="global" params=""} {template="includeCSS" app="core" group="global" location="global" params=""} {template="includeJS" if="theme.js_include != 'footer'" app="core" group="global" location="global" params=""} {template="favico" app="core" group="global" location="front" params=""} </head> ... and includeMathJax template <script type="text/x-mathjax-config"> MathJax.Hub.Config({ extensions: ["tex2jax.js"], jax: ["input/TeX", "output/HTML-CSS"], tex2jax: { inlineMath: [ ['$','$'], ["\\\(","\\\)"] ], displayMath: [ ['$$','$$'], ["\\\[","\\\]"] ], multiLine: true, processEscapes: true }, "HTML-CSS": { availableFonts: ["TeX"] } }); </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="http://cdn.mathjax.org/mathjax/latest/MathJax.js?config=TeX-AMS-MML_HTMLorMML"> </script>

  33. May I suggest a more integrated solution for removing posts, banning someone, and deleting the reports. The current set up has too many steps and takes too much time. My mods see the report - go the admin area and than have to click numerous buttons to go thru the entire process. Then they have to remember to go back and remove the reports. What we do now: 1st part - ban member - with all features selected like IP, name move to banned user group etc. FYI having the link from the front page that give you info on the IP here would be very useful. 2nd part - flag as spammer - click back out of last screen and then go into another menu and flag as spammer 3rd part - remove posts - click back again and then go into the menu and remove the posts 4th step - delete the report - THIS STEP EASY TO MISS as you have to go back to the forum and individually confirm the reports were about that person and then delete them. - this is bad as that means each mod then goes to to the job and finds some one else already has I recommend: 1: have admin set up features that have default actions for what to do about spammers. These are not automatic just default preferences - For us it would be ban IP, ban name, move to deleted member group, flag member as spammer and delete their posts and topics. 2: report area - link to admin area for the person in question and have a 1 click "process and spammer button" OR just have a "process as spammer" button that does the steps in 1 AND deletes the report! Also my members have commented that they noticed a glitch when reporting spam- you can't really tell when its reported easily. So they put a post in the thread that indicates it was reported. This post then has to be deleted. I suggest that a reported post changes format to something like an X thru the entire post and the word spam reported over top. This should be very obvious and will prevent numerous reports. Thanks for the consideration.

    Invite System

    Yes, it is possible but I don't have a Commerce license. Not sure what you mean. This is what appears to me on email: Are you saying that instead of SIGN UP appears the invitation code ? The email template shows the Sign Up text: {{if \IPS\Settings::i()->is_requireinvite}} <a href='{url="app=core&module=system&controller=register&invite_code_req={$invitationCode}" seoTemplate="register" base="front"}' style="color: #ffffff; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', helvetica, sans-serif; text-decoration: none; font-size: 12px; background: {setting="email_color"}; line-height: 32px; padding: 0 10px; display: inline-block; border-radius: 3px;">{lang="sign_up"}</a> {{else}} <a href='{url="app=core&module=system&controller=register&invite_code_opt={$invitationCode}" seoTemplate="register" base="front"}' style="color: #ffffff; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', helvetica, sans-serif; text-decoration: none; font-size: 12px; background: {setting="email_color"}; line-height: 32px; padding: 0 10px; display: inline-block; border-radius: 3px;">{lang="sign_up"}</a> {{endif}} The invitation code is on URL. I'll take a look when I update the app. It can be done.

    how to upgrade

    For my Invision-hosted sites I open a ticket and ask them to kindly upgrade the site. You have to ask as they will not upgrade you unless you do. Thank goodness because I would hate to have a surprise update I wasn't expecting!

    I am a Packer Backer through and through and I will always stand behind them. Both Green Bay and IPS have their qualities as well as the downfalls. For every mistake made the learning curve tightens up and lessons are learned. Consistency. Like Green Bay Invision deals with these issues as they arise. Not always in our time frame or our liking at a particular moment but in the end it is usually in a big way. To be quite honest after 4.0 went live I personally felt it should have stayed as beta and 3.4.9 should have come out instead. I was really learning to dislike it. Now comes 4.1. While in beta preview I honestly thought OK now they are ready for the rubber room. What are you thinking? This will never fly. Surprise! 4.1 at this point has not only impressed me in a big way as it is right now, but I can also see where the barriers of the past limitations, will soon be without restraint.

  44. Unless the licensing terms state otherwise, the app won't lock out. You can continue to use it. If anything you will no longer have access to support or able to download the app. So while your license is active, keep checking for the latest releases and store it in a safe place in case you ever need to reinstall the app. You'll need to read the licensing terms for each app you purchased, but it's very unlikely that will happen. Most if not all the apps are based on a "perpetual" license, which grants you the right to use them uninterrupted. *Read what IPS software versions these apps support. If you are unsure, I suggest that you contact the authors of the apps in question, and they can tell you with 100% certainty.
