  1. I find that I am missing several of the basic tools for getting my work ready for distribution/import to a live site. There is no longer the ability to export or import a block, or any templates. The option to download a database replete with all of it's database settings, templates, custom fields and categories is indeed a fine thing, but this very simply does not address the blocks embedded within those templates, the assets included on the page the database is used on that provide a custom style/javascript functionality, or the common need to export just a template for use with an existing generic database like the default articles system, or multiple available templates to choose from for a given database view being added from a given mod, or even the inability to export page templates(from providing more builder templates to custom wrappers this would be useful). Could you pretty please possibly review the export/import options present within the pages application and restore the basic tools for distribution where the contents of the database settings and fields are irrelevant? As it stands, I'm not going to be able to update several of my mods with it like this, and I've already had to do a manual copy/paste job for a featured articles listing template and a css asset to the live site for a custom, which simply will not fly in distributed works.

  2. Used to have forums as the only and default app in 3.x, upgraded to 4.0 and set Pages as the default app - now all old links are dead. I remember @Matt saying that wouldn't be an issue and all links would be redirected...

  3. there is something i don t understand : some want, this list and some don t. So WHY don t You want to add a tab to toggle on or,off this feature. Then after if You want to improve it later why not but You Just need to add a little tab in member setting to switch this list on or off. What is the problem seriously. If You dont want it toggle it off otherwise toggle it on. It is Just so simple. Why we need to write 100 post to understand that ?

  4. Upgrade from IP. 3.4.x to IPS4.0 I am bringing this back again seeing there are still many that want to know how to upgrade. This is an updated version from my original post where the upgrade is explained from start to finish. So you think you are ready to take the plunge and try a test install / upgrade from your current IP Board to the current IPS4.0 beta and later to the final release. Well we will see. {Comment} The following steps are with the assumption you have already created a test install of your current board and made all the preparations leaving your current live board intact. If Not then see the following article. Creating a Duplicate Local Test board from you Live Board. at the bottom of this article. Step One. 1st, Download and run Get Ready For IPS 4.0 1.0.3 to test your current install to see if it is in fact ready. you can get your copy here. http://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/7046-get-ready-for-ips-40/ OK! all is green and good to go then skip the next step and continue on. But you are showing errors that need to be fixed. OK it's not the end of the world so there is no need to find a cliff or skyscraper to jump from. Download and run IPS UTF8 Database Converter 1.1.13 you can get it here. http://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/6823-ips-utf8-database-converter/ Run the converter and let it do its thing, it will take a while. When this is finished re run Get Ready For IPS 4.0 1.0.3 to make sure all previous errors are fixed. If so we can go forward if not now you can find that cliff or skyscraper. NO Just Kidding!!! But you may want contact support with any errors. Step Two. 1st, Make a backup of your Database call it whatever you like as long as you know where to go if the need comes up. 2nd, Here is a trick I use on my local due to a few corrupt downloads that failed causing me to start a test installs from scratch. 1, Create a _347 folder in your root directory and move all your files into it. Another backup you say? Yep! To go along with the above database backup should something go south on you. 2, Providing you have IP.Downloads copy these files back to your Forum Root Directory from the _347folder. Copy the following folders, downloads, public, screenshots and uploads along with your conf_global.php file. Otherwise only public, uploads and conf_ global.php will due. 3, Copy all the files from the IPS4.0 zip file you downloaded from your clients center to your new test install directory. From your browser go to your test install site http://example.com/admin/upgrade/ and begin the upgrade process.......... Go to Site! If the upgrader asks for your license key, add it but remember to use -TESTINSTALL immediately after the license key. 1234567890-12345-123-12345-1234567890-TESTINSTALL Creating a Duplicate Local Test board from you Live Board. Setting up a test board for upgrade is fairly easy but time consuming. In this section of this Tutorial is a guide for those that have never attempted to create a backup test site of the original live site for upgrade compatibility or other testing purposes. For those of you creating a local test server on your own computer using server software like Wamp, Xampp or Mamp. Follow these easy steps. Make a duplicate copy of your forum site by downloading it via FTP Forum Root to a location on your PC. Now log into your cpanel, PhpMyAdmin and Export the compete associated database. In this example we will be using the Wamp environment. Copy your forum site files into your Wamp - www directory example (C:\wamp\www\test-forum) Go into Wamp via your browser PhpMyAdmin, create a new database and Import the newly saved database into it. In your forum directory C:\wamp\www\test-forum find your conf_global.php. In your conf_global.php settings you need to change these settings. $INFO['sql_database'] = 'original'; to $INFO['sql_database'] = 'new_db_name'; and $INFO['board_url'] = 'http://example.com/forum'; to $INFO['board_url'] = 'http://example.com/test-forum'; And the same with the sql user if needed. $INFO['sql_user'] = 'tester'; Now go to the ACP System Settings - General Configuration make all pertinent changes to Path to 'upload' directory and Upload URL. You can find the hint to these new URL's below the text boxes for example: "IP.Board has detected your uploads path as: D:/wamp/www/test-forum/uploads" and IP.Board has detected your uploads url as: These changes will also need to be made in IP.Blog Settings and IP.Gallery if you have them. Go to System - Server Environment - Settings: Server Environment click on Update Settings. This will Sync your new server location settings in your new database. Next go to Look & Feel - Disable or remove all 3rd party skins. Go to Template Tools in the left side panel check all boxes under - Rebuild Master Skin Data click the Rebuild button. When this is finished click Recache Skin Sets after. Go back to System and Cache Management. Click on Rebuild Global Chaches Cache, Rebuild FURL Cache and then Recache ALL. Though some will say this is not necessary but trust me on this. Your IPS 4 upgrade will love you for doing these. Next back under System - Manage Applications & Modules - Disable all 3rd party Apps then click Recache Apps & Modules. Next step Manage Hooks - Disable all 3rd party hooks then click Reimport Application Hooks... Now lastly before doing the actual upgrade go back to your testboard front end via your browser and test to see if all is working correctly. Making sure it is an exact mirror to your live board. ***NOTE*** As you make these changes in the ACP and save each they are also saved in the new Database. (After creating a 3.4.7 test install and all is working....) Create a _347 backup folder move all the existing files into it. Thus creating a complete backup of the board you are working with. Do the same with your database by backing it up to another name like "new347-backup". You can do this in PhpMyAdmin. If you have IP.Downloads, you will want to copy (duplicate) the following folders from your _347 backup directory you just made back to your forum root. downloads, public, screenshots, uploads and conf_global.php. If you do not have IP.Downloads than all you need to copy back to the root is your public and uploads folders with the conf_global.php. So if your new forum root directory for the test upgrade is named "my-testboard" or "my-testboard.com" the above files need to be copied there. After this has been completed copy your latest IPS4 beta files you downloaded from the client center to the forum root "my-testboard" or "my-testboard.com" with the other files you just put there. Start the upgrade if it asks for your license key, add it but remember to use -TESTINSTALL immediately after the license key. 1234567890-12345-123-12345-1234567890-TESTINSTALL.

  6. The DB is just shy of 4gig... and yes copying the raw file due to this version of Wamp falling on it face even though all settings are set to a bit of an extreme as to cover all bases... I have never attempted doing this via command line I will have to read up on the methods. Can't be much different than using putty.

  7. Yeah, it's awesome isn't it? Limiting by character length is of course a bad approach nowadays because screen sizes vary. In the old days we'd have "acceptable resolutions" which we'd target - now users can be using anything from a tiny phone at 320px wide to a something like the new 5120px wide iMac. On one, 10 characters might be the most you can display on one line, on the other it could be hundreds. That's why we have this responsive design that works at any width and can take, for example, whatever title you throw at it, and make still look great. The days of assuming a user's screen will be somewhere around 1024-1200px wide are behind us (and hurray for that)! To be honest though, it's always been a bit of a hack. Character widths vary significantly - an "i" is much thinner than an "o" and that's before even considering that a title might include non-latin characters (even if your site deals in English only, Emojis are becoming more and more commonplace) so "number of characters" has never been a good way of determining the width of something. We're glad to finally get rid of it

  8. Oh I am not saying you aren't allowed to feel that way. by all means go for it. I've gone elsewhere(I think twice) to XF and considered other platforms until I realized my site is working just fine on IPB and the software is a good product and for my needs only it is the best product. IPB 3.4.7 is fine for me and it is not broken and works well enough so if I had to stay it on another year, I'd be fine....and IPB4 for me looks spectacular and I'll upgrade as soon as my themes and select mods are ready. I wish people would realize that this is a COMPLETE rewrite. This is not a marginal increase and I wish people would understand that out the gate things are going to be buggy as heck, Features get removed all the time from software only to make their way back in after the MAIN product is stable. By all means reevaluate your choices, do you research and move to competing products if that suits your interest. I quickly realized that with moving to another software...they had their own shortcomings. I had to rely on 3rd party mods and hope the developers stayed active and played well with other mods I used(and we know the scandals that are popping up with various developers there). By the time I paid for my renewal fees for that software plus the 3rd party mods renewal fees(which are usually higher in both initial cost and renewal, at least in my experience) I realized I was paying the same or even more than I was with IPB. I've been there done that and wound up right back where I am from and I am willing to give this company an opportunity to bring a product out that is a complete rewrite instead of spending my time arguing/debating over trivial stuff and why it was removed.

  10. A search is not the same as pressing a button that say's members list period. Like this http://vendetta-rs.com/community/index.php?/members/ you can try mimic this with other options in IPB with search but its not what is meant by us and you know this very will but you still act is your well sorry to say ... and can't understand where saying. Also your sorting only counts for the page you are on while the normal members list sorted all pages, again its a search function nothing more nothing less. This is sorted seems there is something wrong with my browser.

  13. So have your moderators actually do moderating to avoid this then. Having arbritary limit settings to try and prevent people from doing "bad" things will never work, as there will always be a way for someone to do these things to your community.

  14. Seriously, guys, stop saying that. IT WAS NOT REMOVED. It was just moved from a single page (and default navigation entry linking there) to be a part of the search function. That’s it. You can discuss all day long how this function could be improved in the future, but stop saying the memberlist was removed. It is untrue and this has been pointed out many times now.

    RC3?

Good for you! But I opted to reinstall the test site from scratch to eliminate possible buggy prerelease and beta installation issues which may be hard to fix. Did not have much content. No much free time to investigate this , so at least by doing from scratch, I know it will be good for next delta release.

  18. A little tip regarding the setting up of the CRON job to handle the tasks for rebuilding - I upgraded my 3.4.7 test site, containing ~56,000 topics/2,600,000 posts, to RC3 on Wednesday and calculated out that the rebuilding tasks would take close to 72 hours to complete even with the CRON job set to every 1 minute (was seeing only a .02% increase every minute for the posts rebuild) The smallest interval that a CRON job can run at is every 1 minute - but there is a way to go lower: sleep xx; (where xx is the number of seconds to wait before running the command after the ; ) I have 3 CRON jobs now set up to run the tasks, each every minute - first one is as presented by IPS when viewing the CRON options within the ACP, but the other two have sleep 20; and sleep 40; added prior to the same command. Result: the task processing was down to every 20 seconds, and I started seeing a .05%/.06% increase every minute for the posts rebuild as a result. So if you are in a position to know that running faster than a minute will not impact your hosting, then give it a try. Note: once the rebuild is complete, no real need to keep the extra 2 so just revert back to having the 1 running every minute.

  19. I must note I do not work for IPS anymore, this was a personal opinion based on what I know of the issue and should not be construed as anything but that. Personally, I feel sympathy for whatever modder decides to actually make this, I'm not sure it can be done in a way that active sites could use it without issues in the first place, the base idea itself of a member list.
    1 point
  20. The members list is by no means effortless to add in. You are basically talking about listing the largest table in the suite in most cases, and the most accessed table in all cases. This in itself is resource intensive. Even the ACP does not generate a paginated list of all of them in one go(is tabbed by status), and with good reason. Additionally, the ACP is not something thousands of users can hit at once. The reason most sites disabled it when it was available was for such resource reasons, and maintaining that kind of resource hog, attempting to keep it from being too much of one, is no easy task. Apologies if that came out offensive, but you make it sound so easy, when it truly has implications you are not considering.

  22. For people that can't understand this removing the numbers is only going to piss off people it would have been a 5 min job to make it an option. It's like the profile show or do not show all over again for many not an issue but for sites that deal with people below the age of 16 its going to be difficult to upgrade.

Where is the members list ?

@Rikki Firstly thank you! I appreciate you taking a genuine interest in considering this. Funny thing is, I would consider a member search mostly useless. In the rare occasion I need to search for a member outside of an ACP I am glad to have it but mostly it's unrelated to what I envision for invision (sorry, poor pun) Most forum software suites are really great at presenting tens of 1000's of posts and other information by leveraging topics, and forum categories. TOPICS are front and center. This is no surprise since organizing the posts of it's users into logical threads has always been the root purpose for having a web forum. However, what hasn't yet been done in a forum suite is to make use of an integrated system that brings the wealth of PEOPLE a community has to the fore-front. As mentioned many times in this thread, member lists have largely been a useless after thought as opposed to a primary structure. Communities focused on people are fun and I think it's the way to succeed in the future. We all like to be famous. Just as people enjoy pushing their followers on instagram, we would love to push our popularity within a community!!! We have an advantage here too over instagram because forum based communities tend to have a focused purpose. Can you imagine a member being able to rise up as a respected authoritative figure on a specific topic due thousands of community followers? That would be good for a community. You might be aware that forum software and it's use are floundering in general. Many sources site that forum software is being used increasingly less. I believe this can turn around by meeting what people want out of the internet and feeding user ego seems to be a big component of what is in demand. So how do we improve on the member list? Well this is certainly open for many ideas but I think it's a conversation worth having. I can offer my ideas as a starting point. Firstly calling it a member list would be a disservice. It's a culture shift, It's a complete shift in strategy. A strategy that brings importance to members as well as topics and merges them in a synergistic manner. This is a people focal point and needs a more appropriate name. One thing is to bring this visually into at least 2015. A Grid will bring focus to members and their personality. However, as you rightly pointed out this won't make it more useful. So what does it do? Well for one lets give the opportunity for everyone to have a short headline. This will bring personality. Secondly lets not have people listed who don't have avatars. Let's rank people by followers so they can build popularity. Let's allow sorting by location. Let's have leader lists. in order by likes this week, most posts this week, most friends ETC.. This will provide healthy competition and increase activity. Let''s have activity feeds so we can see what members are up to. It's all about the Buzz. Let's have all time leader awards. Most pictures posted. Oh and I said synergistic right? How does this help a forum with topics? well I can find a member with the most followers and I can start reading his or her posts/topics. Get to the good stuff right? This is especially useful for picture based forums. The ideas can go on and on, how about "most quoted".. maybe even auto promote to article, or snippets of the quote. I am sure others have ideas but first we need to align to the idea that members are largely being ignored and this must change. Members are an integral element to success. After all members drive ALL the posting, and ALL the topics and ALL the content. Ask yourself "Why even post on a forum in the first place???" We need to be better at providing a reason to participate or people will continue moving to Tumblr, Facebook and Instagram. I can't say it enough MEMBERS ARE IMPORTANT.. MEMBERS , MEMBERS , MEMBERS ,MEMBERS ,MEMBERS !!!!!

  29. Issues still happen and will forever happen, even polished code like 3.4.7 issues happen, you cannot predict everything. I have spent plenty of time dealing with users who don't know anything about technology and getting the littlest bit of information out of them is incredibly hard. The best thing to do is say "What is the error code you got?" They supply it and you're on your way to fixing the problem or can easily reference IPS.

    Login Handler

I would suggest you to take a look at the existing login handlers and classes in system/Login/-folder. Especially the ones that have a similar approach to the login you're trying to integrate with. If you're experienced enough, that should get you started. There is no official documentation on it yet for IPS 4.

    Remove error code for users

I'd actually be very unhappy if the error codes were removed or hidden by default. It's not user unfriendly at all actually. Error codes are the best way to have the end-user help the developers rectify an issue without having to understand the technical system in the background. It doesn't stand out in the least, there when you need it but not overbearing of the surrounding content.

  34. Upgrading from a previous 4.0.0 beta to RC 1 with custom CSS If you have created a custom theme that makes use of Font-Awesome, or you've created a theme with Designer's Mode, then please check your CSS to ensure that you now only use a single backslash whereas previously it would have used two. For example, in previous betas you might have used this: content: "\\f1022"; As of RC 1, you'll need to use: content: "\f1022";

  35. i think now most admin will use ip.pages with the powers and simplicity that comes with it but i think admins want more field options or creative ones to ease the task when we create awesome databases and pages with it out of the box 1- one field i need when i use ip.pages is grouped fields can we have the ability to group some fields and add a name for it and display them side by side in the edit or display template something like the polls Choices (so we can generate something like this easily) after we group them admin can config how they behave like flag the group as duplicable and button will be showing to duplicate the field like the add more choice for polls or filterable so we can generate fields like this easily with ability to duplicate or remove field in front end for our users to submit for this i have db with 145 fields with this option i can achieve the same thing with at least 20 fields 2- another thing i miss when using ip.content is the limit on field filters we have i hope with ip.pages we can use filters on all field type(text, dates, number, relationship, etc) allow advance users to add custom filters easily to any field 3- can we have time field yes i know we can adjust the date field to achieve it but at least add time picker rather than showing full date picker for the field 4- improve relationship field and add the ability to link by DB record_id or any row id 5- add the ability to update db with newer version i work in my localhost after that i export the db and import it in my live site i love this but if i updated my work in my localhost can we have the option or the ability to update our db from newer exported file that would be awesome 6- add linked dropdown one option in dropdown can trigger or show another dropdown 7- tags fields either based on exiting DB field or the central tags system i love how the menu showing to add tag into the text box 8- i love you IPS team for ip.pages lover and users if you have any suggestion or the things you miss or think it will make your life easier share it with us

  37. I'm not following them by my own desire. They were my friends. IPS forced me to change, it's not something I wanted or asked. Can I keep my friends or is this prohibited on IPS4 ? IPS should at least leave it well clear on upgrade... I can't tell you if this exists because I only installed new boards of IPS4; I never had the nerve to upgrade.

  38. The Q&A topics must be able to be mixed with regular topics in forums. Specific Q&A forums don't work in an existing forum structure that we all have. That was heavily discussed in the IPS 4 preview website.
    1 point
  39. IPS has meant it as replacement, but it just doesn’t work*. Q&A forums are a unique forum view – where posts are (by default) ordered by their ranking. I cannot and will not apply that view to all my forums where I have Best Answer enabled now, because all those threads are purely linear chronological discussions. It would ruin hundreds of existing threads and also completely change the way these forum work from now on. I do want to give the topic starter the chance to mark the best reply and let others see the best reply easily, but I don’t need any post ranking and post ranking order whatsoever in many of my forums. *I wish I could just like to the old threads on the test server. Do we really have to repeat all the discussions from there again?
    1 point
  40. There were already long discussions about this on the test site. But in short: Yes, it was a rather new function which was heavily used and it should remain the way it was. The same is true for the Media Tag manager. The Q&A forum system is no replacement for the best answer feature, which can be used in any regular forum.

  41. I love that Invision has added such simple Mandrill integration to their suite. One suggestion I have is to extend the use of tags to the built-in non-bulk e-mailing when using Mandrill for all mails. I'd love to have a "Registration", "Password change", "Digest", "Notification", etc. set of tags automatically added. Maybe use the custom SMTP "X-MC-Tags" header and just add them to all outgoing mails without worrying about whether you're using Mandrill or not? Also, it would be great if we had a simple way to temporarily disable ALL e-mails to an outdated address (something that is bouncing in Mandrill) and ask that user to update their address next time they log into the board. This would help with Mandrill reputation issues, allowing us to catch the problem on the first send, and then not keep getting rejected on every subsequent send.
