How can I set a secondary group for the default rank after registration? By default, the user does not have it assigned, and it looks like if a secondary group is not set, they cannot be promoted to another group.

You cannot set a secondary group as default. You may wish to revert that to a primary that cannot be promoted

I don't quite understand. Example: A user creates an account on the forum and receives the primary group as "Novice" but does not have a secondary group assigned. Now, I have a group promotion set from "Novice" to "User," and I have enabled group promotion for "Novice." However, if the user does not have "Novice" as a secondary group, they cannot be promoted. If I manually set their secondary group to "Novice" as well, they are immediately promoted to "User" once they meet the requirements.

I have to be honest and say Im not sure what the confusion is there. If they are not in the secondary group, and you have set your promotion criteria to work on secondary groups, it will indeed not promote. You cannot automatically give a second group on registration.

What you could do, if you really wanted every registered user to also have a secondary group, is add another rule that states if a user is in the registered primary group, give them the secondary group.

I would be interested to know what you use case is here, as it sounds like quite an odd thing to be doing, and I feel you may be trying to work around something unnessesarily
