if you start composing new pm (from top menu with icons or from messenger ui), it will bring up a popup where you can do so

but this approach has one problem - if you missclick somewhere out from this popup, whole message will disappear without possibility of recovery 😔

imagine composing some long and important message and after some time you lose everything because of one missclick 😐

the fix might be easy, do it same way as with new forum topic - dont open it in a popup if it is not possible to save a draft in a popup, but on separate page 🤔 this could always show a draft first after starting a new message
