As an administrator, my Invision forum said I needed to upgrade. I went into the forum control panel and tried to do so but got a message that I am running PHP version 7.4 and need at least 8.0 to upgrade. So, my web host put me on a different server and made PHP versions 8.0 up to 8.4 available. However, when I change to any of the upgraded PHP versions, my forum will not operate. I've tried going into the Invision control panel first, then switching to an upgraded version of PHP, then trying to upgrade, but get a message that there are problems with my database that need to be fixed before I can be upgraded. I've tried using "fix this" in the Invision control panel but that doesn't seem to fix the problem. I've also used the database repair tool in my website control panel but that doesn't seem to fix whatever problem Invision has with my database. The Invision control panel offers details on how I can fix the database manually but, as you can probable tell, that is way above my knowledge level. Can you help? I am currently back to using PHP 7.4 so my forum will operate.

Thanks, Jack

What is your current version and what version did you try to upgrade to? You can go ahead and upgrade first the php version to the recommended value for the Ipb version that you want to upgrade to and then you can start overwriting your forum files with those from the newest version. If you see errors in the forum during the files transfer, don't worry about it as that's normal. Once after the files have been overwritten successfully any php incompatibility errors should go away and you will be able to procedd with the upgrade.

Or you can also first overwrite the forum files and after that's finished you can update the php version and run the upgrader. Personally I would go with the first method.

For future reference, it would help if you posted the error messages that you get.

I appreciate the attempts to help me, but all of this is above my level of expertise. I've been paying Invision for over 20 years and always just paid to have whatever work needed to be done to keep my community running. I guess those days have passed. I will just cancel my subscription and proceed with my old version as long as it will work.

Sorry to hear this is the case. Being self hosted will come with some element of self management. In this case, backups of course would need to be done by yourself or your hosting team, and the rest is done from your admin CP and then updating a file once its done. If you do want a solution whereby your hosting side is also managed, our cloud solution may be a better fit for you. If thats something you are interested in, please feel free to reach out to our sales team, who would be able to assist in getting you migrated

Upgrades and third party related stuff, such backups, restores, apps to name a few things, fall under the custom category imo and as such they are outside the scope of support.

If you can't handle that yourself, you can start learning the know hows or you can hire someone else to handle them for you. Or better yet, switch to the Cloud hosting and then you won't have to deal with none of that custom stuff server wise or forum upgrades, but concentrate on building and managing your forum.
