My forum is over 20 years old and we have only just started using the badge system

I've recently added some rule based badges to reflect 5/10/15/20/25 years memberships but I'm not sure if they are auto applied to those members who qualify or do I need to rebuild members achievements ?

You would need to rebuild achievements for any new rules to take effect on old data.

is that a long task and does it effect anything else ?

It would go through all your content, data, etc... so if you have a lot of users, content, etc... it could take long, yes. It would only rebuild all your rules.

It will be back at 0 because you're rebuilding it from 0.
