is it possible to remove custom profile fields and field groups from the left sidebar and add them under "About me"?

I thought I would add the fields myself into the appropriate template "Core/front/profile/fieldtab". Unfortunately the fields have no template key, is there another way?

There is no built in way to achieve this unfortunately, no. You can remove them no problem at all, by simply removing the "Show with member's content submissions?" setting in that profile field.

In terms of where to put it on profile. Showing things on the profile isnt an issue. You would simply change the "Show on member's profile?" setting on that field. However, it would not show under "About me" as about me itself is a profile field (instead they show on the left panel). Any profile fields set to WYSIWYG show as a new tab in the profile, which is why you see it as a tab.
