Hi,

Have managed to create a forum section specifically to keep certain organisations away from each other, but am now just left with looking to hide the 

'X Joint the Community' or 'x Started Following' or 'x has been renamed to' style messages.

Can someone point me to where this would be.

Are you referrring to the activity stream? If so, you can alter this in your admin CP by visiting System->Content Discovery->Streams, then clicking on 'Activity Stream Settings' in the top right
