Can the forum be set up so that search engines can crawl for search content but at the same time prevent guest user group to read the content? I mean, can the search engines crawl for content to help in the search engine optimization but at the same time set IPS up to prevent uses from reading content if unregistered?

Not by default, no - a search engine can only see what a guest can see, so if you restrict the guest then you restrict the search engine.
