Adding a "X New Threads" and "X New Posts" To Forum

Currently the forum landing page will show that new posts have been made inside a category, but it doesn't tell you how many posts/threads. 

Does anyone know a way in which to pull through the number of threads within that category? This is something we would be happy to pay a freelancer to do if it requires anything more than just pulling through variables.
