Everybody is choosing "Night Mode" nowadays....

Chrome 78 has a "force dark mode" that uses color inversion - might be an option for those (depends on how well or not the inversion works with your forum theme).

To enable it: chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark

What the hell that works quite nice on IPS. Just header is not dark but everything else looks minty!

I prefer White for websites. But I totally agree that IPS must add default dark theme. There is the only reason for that - help theme developers for making their dark themes. Now if some not developer guy installs IPS and if he wants to create a dark mode the visual styling isn't enough to make it. If he changes all possible fields to the dark colors he still sees white areas. Just because their colors are hardcoded in the css files. In this case, there is no way of making perfect dark themes without CSS editing from the default theme.

I personally do not like dark mode. I actually find it harder to read.

The only things I like dark are:

- My code editor
- My coffee
- My memes

So we have IPS opinions but the fact is, night mode is a thing amongst popular social media sites now and phone devices. I had to create a night mode skin due to alot of requests lately but it could still be bettered, with an easy on/off switch for example.

I only said what my personal preference was. It's been a long long time since we coded Ikon Power Community Suite 4 just for my own personal tastes.

We realise dark mode is a thing and people seem to like it. As mentioned above, the app has a dark mode. Whether we can being dark mode as a theme option rather than a totally new theme is another matter. We will discuss it but as we have a gazillion things we want to do, it won't get massive priority.

There's a bunch of good dark themes in the marketplace already.

I think rather than IPS doing a night theme, it would be better to add an admin option to designate a light theme and dark theme, and once that's completed, the front end displays a user option for "follow device dark mode setting". I think that approach is more than sufficient. I guess you'd also need to then have the core check for https://drafts.csswg.org/mediaqueries-5/#prefers-color-scheme and select the appropriate theme based on what the admin selects for each. That to me seems a better solution than IPS doing its own dark theme (maybe down the line you could, but what's missing from the suite is the ability to check for prefers-color-scheme and having it just work).

Edit: Or I could just read the whole thread and see that @opentype who is much smarter than me already covered this. 🤦‍♂️

Dark mode is neither necessary nor desirable.

Nothing is really “necessary”. Objectively though, it’s an option for users that many enjoy having, so I think saying it’s not desirable is simply false. All major browsers and OSes now support native dark mode. There’s a reason (hint: has to do with being desirable.)

For me, I use it at night if I’m in the rocking chair with my infant. I have an iPhone X so anything that uses true black is very dark which is perfect. I read a lot of reddit (which supports dark natively) because it’s not too bright for the room.

Yeah, like many persons. But making forum/site is not only making it for our self right? 🙂 We have got 70 000 users, and many of them like it a lot.

You can check our Dark Mode project:

That's a nice way to implement dark mode - not pure black, but shades of dark grays so it's easier on the eyes.

And of course you can enter our site and test it live:

Just choose Style: Audiostereo Black from styles 😉

But still automatic option to switch it after dark from default one to Black will be great. Many ppl don't like Black ones at day, but loves it at night.

An idea is to offer an "automatic" dark mode - look at the user's local time and switch the theme from light to dark depending on what time it is for them.

Exactly like that. We have our standard one (bright), and want to give users such an option like you said. Many users don't want/need dark mode at day, but after dark is very nice. Im one of them - when Im on our forum at the day its fine to use standard one, but option for automatic change will be great.

I don't know which is worse, the folks who don't grasp that dark mode is a form of accessibility and a necessity for many, or the haters who post the daftest comments.

I learnt sometime ago with some surprise that a lot of people struggle with white text on black or dark background, it honestly never occurred to me. I was told by some an optician that as people get older, they often need brighter displays, televisions etc whereas I find they make me sneeze. Personally I like both white/black and black/white but certainly at night I find white backgrounds hurt my eyes, and I'm light sensitive anyway. Trying to read the bright white BBC News app at 3am with my iPad brightness at 0 is torture. When I see dark mode available as a choice, I enable it.
