Invision Community 5: A video walkthrough creating a custom theme and homepage By Matt Thursday at 04:02 PM
NeedCoffee Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 We had a user write virtually an essay in the subject line of a Support Request, which really messed up the display of the ticket in the Support area. I checked all the settings and cannot see a way to limit the number of characters for Support Request titles. I'll ask IPS support, but posting it here as feedback too.
NeedCoffee Posted December 13, 2018 Author Posted December 13, 2018 Example screenshot as I know people like screenshots! I appreciate there might be cases where you really want all that in the subject, rather than body, but it's a bit of a PITA and would be nice if, like topic titles, it could be set as an option :)
Joel R Posted December 13, 2018 Posted December 13, 2018 I applaud this support ticket for being an actual example of the issue. You know, so IPS Support can confirm the issue. Â
NeedCoffee Posted December 13, 2018 Author Posted December 13, 2018 Cheers @Joel RÂ Â We hope they take it the same way - and I did apologise and invite them to delete the ticket if they wanted to!
NeedCoffee Posted December 13, 2018 Author Posted December 13, 2018 Update from IPS support ticket: Apparently no setting anywhere currently to stop this. There is a setting for topic titles as we know, but nothing to stop you doing the full 255 in support requests. Hopefully this post and my demo ticket will spur them to bring in an option in a future IPB release :)
NeedCoffee Posted December 14, 2018 Author Posted December 14, 2018 Â someone at IPS has changed my ticket title now - I guess they are strongly in agreement that it's far too long! It now looks like this: Rather than this (notice the ticket number is the same) Was that you @Mark H or someone from the management? Either way, I trust we'll see this fix in the next version now that you've decided it was too long for the IPS deskÂ
bfarber Posted December 19, 2018 Posted December 19, 2018 Support requests can be created via email - how would you handle that? Reject the email? Truncate the subject to whatever max length you specify?

Truncate the subject to whatever max length you specify? If it exceeds length, truncate. Then prepend the content with a full length  Subject: line. Maybe not an awesome idea, but an idea nonetheless so tickets aren't lost, nor data.
Management Charles Posted December 20, 2018 Management Posted December 20, 2018 I'm always wary to add core-code for things that have only ever happened once in 15+ years 🙂 Â
Maxxius Posted December 20, 2018 Posted December 20, 2018 that's just a too much of an unlikely thing to happen. leave it as it is.

Surely stopping some abuse of the character limit (i.e. ones created via form) is better than doing nothing at all in the hope this doesn't happen very often @Charles? You wouldn't have character limits at all inside IPB if you applied this logic - but in fact you have them in several places, just not here 🙂
bfarber Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Did any actual issue result from this, or are your concerns centered around the extra-long ticket title?
