How do I go about adding an advert to my forum main index page sidebar only, when I select the sidebar option in the admin it, an advert is added on every forum page on the side, I only want it on the default index forum page.. Thanks

Well, you can’t do that with the advertisement feature.

Would need custom code, Pages or third-party block plugins.

I was also trying to do this by creating the ad and using custom location, creating the "key" then adding the {advertisement="key"} shortcode into a block above one particular forum category only.

Just like it describes here  but the only thing that shows up is the shortcode

I have pages, what do I need to do? I used to be able to just create a custom code in IPB3 using an ad and then put the code into the template. I'll have to try and have a play.

You could do the same in 4.x, but it’s not really necessary if you have Pages. You can just create a HTML Pages block, put your ad code in it and then drag the block on your forum index. 

Cool I may try that and I can just set it to show on the forum index page sidebar only not every forum section sidebar ?

Would I be able to set it to show on the index sidebar only, like all the other sidebar options for IPB, wheres that option ?

It doesn’t need an option. If you drag ANY block to the forum index, it will only show on the forum index, since the forum app has 3 views with separate sidebars: index, forum view, topic view.
