Selling Subscriptions

Recommended Posts

My request to IPS is to please re-design the system to deal with subscriptions as its own thing. It all feels put together in a make shift way.

In other words. When setting the type of product, there should be a 4th option:

1. Hosting Plan
2. Advertisement
3. Normal Product
4. Subscription

With this 4th option you have the possibility to create new specialised logic, for example:

a. Members moving up and down subscriptions more fluidly. (they currently can upgrade from "manage purchases", but if they go to the store to buy a different subscription level, it just adds a new one, rather than upgrade from the old)

b. Members only being able to purchase one subscription at a time. (currently they can add multiple subscription to the cart and purchase them all because they are treated as "normal products".

etc...

Based on how many topics I see pop up relating to selling and managing subscriptions, it's clear that currently there are flaws and limitations. I believe subscriptions are too complicated to be treated the same as selling a "normal product" and deserve their own settings.

Please please, pretty please

The only other comment I have is that this should be an easy one to prioritize because it is actively helping us monetize our communities so we can keep paying you lot for your hard work :p

I agree. I imagine many of their customers would benefit greatly from this.

We agree with a dedicated subscription option - we've roadmapped it. :)

If you want to sneak in a “Tip/Bribe Lindy” button, that likely wouldn’t face too much opposition. Just saying.

Yeah the subscription model has significant opportunity for improvement. I'd love to be able to have something similar to how invision themselves sell their subscription products.

E.g. Choice of a few options where you can show the benefits/features and have a featured subscription, with one click to take user to a cart pre-populated with the subscription.

@Lindy Just noticed your post above, are you able to share any rough times for the roadmap?

yeah, this is becoming pretty important for me as I am selling online tutoring packages that rely on the possibility of up/downgrading subscriptions.  I'd love to know when this is going to be implemented (especially since Commerce is, I wager, your most lucrative app ;))

Good stuff - my userbase suffer finding it over complicated at moment. Also don't seem to get alerted to when a subscription is about to expire but maybe that's me not having it setup right?

I think I mentioned this elsewhere, but please make it easy to move existing products to a subscription without having the customer go through the invoicing process if they are in recurring billing. :)
