I see that IPS has a free phpbb>IPS converter. My query is, does this work out the box to convert to ips4 or is the way described in this link still the only way to do this 

 

 

It would be probably best to ask this question in a ticket in the Client Area, that topic is relatively old now. It may even refer to phpbb version 2.

Looking directly at the converter app in IPS4, it does list phpbb3, here's a snippet of some of it:

I'd suspect it will be phpbb2 you'd have concerns with as noted above, that would likely want to have a 3x 'conversion' first, similar to how you'd temporarily use 3x to do say an IPB 1.x upgrade.

I would say if you're in any doubt to either try a test conversion on a mirror/copy of your site if possible or just get confirmation in a support ticket first.
