With 3.x EOL and 4.2 around the corner

Has IPS ever considered archiving off all the old posts on this site?

While there is no problem with performance, I'd just like to see them removed from search results. I get tired of doing a search for something only to find that the most relevant posts are from the 2.x and 3.x days. Either that or reset the default to show results sorted by date.

It would be difficult and extremely time-consuming to separate the legacy content from the current version - one way to do it programmatically would be is to find all mentions of 3.x in the bodies and titles of posts, and then set a "3.x" tag to them - even then, it wouldn't catch everything.

If there was an open tagging system where anyone could tag content, the community could help in catching the outliers, that would help too.

The second step would be then to offer the tag as a search criteria, with 4.x being the default, and allow searches for 3.x content as an optional parameter (interesting too that tags aren't part of the search criteria already).

Aren't all the 3.x discussions in their own forums and new ones were created for 4.x?

Yes. Unfortunately because they're not archived, they still appear in search results which is the concern of the original OP.
