I would really love that category permissions comes back in a future version of Pages. I don't want to have to create 2 different "Articles" databases to provide information to both members and none members. It's an all or nothing which is detrimental to my professional website and it's difficult on my hobby site.

Edit the category and enable 'Set Custom Permissions', you'll now see a permissions link in the menu on the category index.
