Member search fields makes no sense, you have to also search

Please allow member search fields to be searched independently.

Marked WAI, so...

Try to find members in Wyoming using Location search field, BUT you also have to enter something in the main search field which searches display names. Huh? Fields are not searchable alone. So you may find one member in Wyoming by guessing a display name. That's about all it does.

If I search Hobbies with "fishing" I have to also to search display names with a term? It makes no sense. I can put fishing there too but then I get a user with fishing in his name and fishing under Hobbies. As seen in my bug with the word "test" twice.

I really need this sorting also.   My members need to be able to search for specifics like "single" or "a couple"  or "family" or other things like same interests.... walking, horse riding, etc etc.

The main search field simply gets in the way so the search should be able to go ahead with all the other fields.   Unless they went through the alphabet and put "a" in the main search field and then inculded the interests or other fields too , but this is impractical  and would mean going through the whole alphabet.

Thanks. As another use case I am trying to find all people who joined in the last month and it always requires me to enter a search term as well. This used to work without a search term and returned all members with the filter applied. (Though the "last month" I could not get to work in any case - I always had to enter a pair of dates).

Aside from member search and fields, you should also be able to, in content search, enter a member name in "Search By Author," hit enter, and get their content results. Instead it asks to complete the search field, but the member name is the single field. 3.4 worked this way.

You may want to find an author's posts by time period or another variable. You should not have to use the search field.

In 4.1 it works this way for "Search By Tags," you just enter the tags in that field, but does not work with authors.

Thanks!

It's very hard to search for and find other members.

Since this is considered "Community" software now. I really wish more focus would be on the community. Instead it seems things have gone the opposite direction. The member list is completely gone.

If focus was on community, shouldn't there be an enhanced member list with fine tuned member search capabilities? I would love to be able to search by custom profile field values etc. I don't see it happening soon.

I think if they fix searching fields independently it will help what you are after, as you can create a member list using the search function, the problem is, you can't use any of the fields without a search term in the main field. That's a bug/oversight whatever you want to call it, but that will help a lot in finding members. Right now it's useless, having to enter a search term in the main field.

Actually, good news:

But can you imagine if they would upgrade the "Location" profile field to save and use coordinates based on zip code used. That would increase the functionality of that field many times what it is now. Currently it's inconsistent and near useless. We could actually search for other members based on location!!  That would be powerful for a "community" It could be done easily using googles API

Yes agreed, 4.2's focus is supposed to be user engagement and 4.1 is stability so you are unlikely to see it until 4.2, but you should definitely suggest what you want in detail.

4.2 is not far away, once they button up 4.1 and start 4.2 active development it is reported to be within 4 months of that.

Member search works!

Still though, if you go to Content Search and choose an author, you should be able to click Search and it loads all their content without anything in the search field.

"Please enter a term to search for, or at least one tag."

It should allow author search with an empty field the same way it allows tag search. To show user content without a search term.
