I have 3.4.8 I'd like to know how to merge posts automatically when a user double posts.

As a moderator or admin, you will need to select the two posts in the topic that you want to merge by clicking the checkbox next to the post count number, then select "merge" from the hover moderation box in the lower right hand corner.
