If after a new release the counts are shrinking, that means fewer bugs are coming in. Additionally, it's worth noting that developer time is not focused solely on bug reports right now (there are some miscellaneous projects to sort out before we can release, and the current RC releases are supported so we have tickets we address issues through as well). Seeing as they missed it, I doubt they will ever ballpark a date again, however they said it is close, so that's as close as you'll get to a date.
