I am running IPB 3.4.7 on utf8_unicode_ci collation. During fresh Install I have realised that another collation named utf8mb4 was used unless we uncheck the option.

What happens during an upgrade on a  3.4.7 having a collation of utf8_unicode_ci ?  Is a conversion done ?

If you are already on utf8_unicode_ci you are not presented the option to convert to utf8mb4 - it is not necessary (though you can do so if you like).
