Jelly Belly™ Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 HiI run my IBP forum on a dedicated server, we have no other sites sharing resources, just one IPB forumThe forum has around 4 million posts and 60,000 members with an average at anyone time of around 300 members and 8 or 900 guests onlineour server specs areServer type: Hp DL180 G6Processor type: Intel Quad-Core Xeon E5504Processor speed: 2000MhzNumber of CPUs: 2Number of cores: 4RAM: 32GBHard disks :4 × 1TBHardware RAID:Most of the time the site runs fine, uploads are quick, posts are made fast but for the last couple of months several times a day our mysql db seems to spiral out of control, eats up all of the processor power quickly followed by all the ram until it becomes completely unresponsive, sometimes it bounces back up after a few minutes, other times it can be out for several hours and we have to restart mysql and apache to get the site back online againWe recently doubled our ram from 16gb to 32gb which seemed to work for a few weeks but now the problem is back and his happening more frequently, probably every couple of hours now leaving us offline more than onthis is a quick cut n paste of the top readout an ACP that i grabbed yesterday before it died System Software Linux WJI.local 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Sun May 6 04:00:17 UTC 2012 x86_64Current Server Load 6.68Total Server Memory 32236 MBAvailable Server Memory 3677 MBSystem Processestop - 14:44:43 up 89 days, 39 min, 0 users, load average: 10.55, 3.47, 1.73Tasks: 301 total, 12 running, 288 sleeping, 0 stopped, 1 zombieCpu(s): 7.6%us, 1.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 90.3%id, 0.5%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.1%si, 0.0%stMem: 33010436k total, 29056044k used, 3954392k free, 840556k buffersSwap: 3999992k total, 35568k used, 3964424k free, 21390048k cachedPID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND31468 mysql 20 0 735m 124m 7464 S 242 0.4 11187:51 mysqld27900 www-data 20 0 325m 62m 5168 R 36 0.2 0:00.72 apache227879 www-data 20 0 324m 62m 4172 S 20 0.2 0:00.49 apache227954 www-data 20 0 323m 61m 4008 S 20 0.2 0:00.41 apache227758 www-data 20 0 307m 44m 5548 R 18 0.1 0:01.79 apache227816 www-data 20 0 326m 64m 5328 S 14 0.2 0:01.00 apache227919 www-data 20 0 313m 51m 4236 R 14 0.2 0:00.34 apache227993 www-data 20 0 302m 40m 4248 S 14 0.1 0:00.41 apache210028 root 0 -20 0 0 0 S 13 0.0 77:37.81 hcp_watchdog27814 www-data 20 0 320m 59m 5024 S 13 0.2 0:00.69 apache2any advice gratefully received

Ahmad E. Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Check the access logs of apache, it could be the result of a DoS attack. Had one of these myself.
ASTRAPI Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 It is better to give more details like: When it happen, is it every day? is it at the same time daily? is it every x minutes? Post Apache configuration like workers and related limits... Post php configuration setings Post a mysql report using mysqltuner script So we can have a better idea and will be able to help you From the first side it seems that something is running in the background (but you say not) maybe a plugin/addon, the second one is that you have very low numbers on configuration and requests are waiting or running for ever and third that you are under attack as Ahmad already note....
Jelly Belly™ Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 I think i may have found the cause, I could be wrong though we installed a new hook shortly before this issue started would that cause issues on a busy board ? I've disabled it and the server load dropped straight away
Rhett Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 I think i may have found the cause, I could be wrong though we installed a new hook shortly before this issue started would that cause issues on a busy board ? I've disabled it and the server load dropped straight away Yes, there are a lot of developers creating hooks that don't always take into account a large site with heavy traffic on it, and a lot of times they don't have such a site to test on. An example of this, if you add 5 extra queries to a page, and they are longer queries etc, on a site with 50 people on it, not a big deal in most cases, take that same item on a site with 5000 people on it, and you have an explosion of mysql.
Jelly Belly™ Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 I currently have 280 members and 743 guests online and server load is sat between 0.14 and 0.50 Available Server Memory 24144 MB which is all about normal certainly better than a server load of 100 and 99mb of ram left which it was earlier today fingers crossed disabling the hook has cured my problem
RevengeFNF Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 I currently have 280 members and 743 guests online and server load is sat between 0.14 and 0.50 Available Server Memory 24144 MB which is all about normal certainly better than a server load of 100 and 99mb of ram left which it was earlier today fingers crossed disabling the hook has cured my problem Also, for a site like yours, i would recommend you switching to MariaDB 10. It makes a HUGE difference in terms of speed compared to your MySQL 5.1(which is outdated anyway).
ASTRAPI Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Yes it will be much better to use Nginx and MariaDB
TSP Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 If you should wish to enable the hook for your members again, then it could work better if you use the setting to exclude it for guests, since they will "always" be the largest portion of visitors and may not feel it's as useful.Depends of course on the level of activity that makes it crumble and whether the hook author have written the code so the queries are not being run. (Some authors simply only do the view logic in template, which is not good enough)
RevengeFNF Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Yes it will be much better to use Nginx and MariaDB Its true. For myself i prefer to use Apache with Nginx as reverse proxy.

Is it part of C-Panel or ? ?

Rhett Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Changing your server configuration to work around a poorly coded hook isn't the ideal situation, while improving your performance is always a good thing, I wouldn't look at that alone as a long term solution to the hook causing the issue. I would report this to the author of the hook so perhaps they can improve their coding and queries to perform better on a busier site.
ASTRAPI Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Cpanel is good and easy to use but if you are looking for performance/security then is better without it..
Jelly Belly™ Posted January 25, 2015 Author Posted January 25, 2015 as an up date to this, the server is running better since the hook was uninstalledHowever we seem to be losing a couple of GB of RAM each day until there isn't enough left and then the server crashesfor instance we shut down Apache and run optimize repair db via SSH and after completion we have around 24gb out of 32 gb available server memorythen over the course of a few days the available memory gradually drops, once we have around 10gb left a crash follows shortly afterwardsits the post table that I think is causing the problem, we have almost 4 million posts and around 1200 new posts each day and as the available ram drops so posting, editing, deleting all take longer and longer to completeanything i can do to stop this ?

Not sure what's consuming it or where to find my.cnf, I don't have a server admin atm and my skills are pretty limited this is the read out from the diagnostics in ACP the available memory was sat at RevengeFNF Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Do you have SSH access to your server? if yes, run: cat /etc/my.cnfIf it gives an error, its because my.cnf is on another location, but normally is that one. At this moment you have almost 11Gb free, but 17Gb are cached files from the OS. So in reality you have 28Gb free memory.
