Regular Releases. Could you please start doing them again?

Hello IPS guys,

I would like to share how much I loved and found useful the regular 4.0 Sute Friday releases that you guys were doing until recently. Each Friday we were waiting for a new release impatiently - to install/update, play with it and test. Predictability and certainty are the 2 things that customers love the most in such cases.

Would you mind start start doing regular releases again?
It would be really great if each Friday we can have a new Beta version + possibly new prerelease version for Pages (and Commerce)

That would mean there has to be a new beta each friday, thus marking each beta phase just exactly one week long.

Isn't that a bit too restrictive? :)

^^ Plus you can see from the bug reports that there are a lot of identified problems that IPS are working through. What would be the point of purposely distributing a version that you know contains a tonne of flaws?

Yes, Beta 50. No, I think you'll see a couple of releases and then the final release.

Because you know it also contains tonnes of fixes that the people running test sites are eagerly waiting for?

You guys are forgetting that we have only had one Pages pre-release.

...and all the rest in Beta 2.

Not true, Store and Chat haven't been released at all yet.

My point is, Forums had about 20 pre-releases, so it's logical to expect at least 10 for Pages. I mean, it's possible that IPS surprises us and moves Pages straight into Beta but estan's question still makes sense.

I don't think so. Forums everybody has. Content, humm... Don't know, IPS wants to release it anyway this year. We're on Nov 21! Don't expect a final release to happen after Dec 10. They don't want to spend Christmas and New Year with Tracker exploding in bugs. A big release like that always has issues on conversion, etc.

Anyway, that's my opinion... only IPS knows what will happen.

I also do not want to work between Christmas and New Year! Sadly that is out of the question...

I do. I don't think they will want to delay the release again. But again: that's my opinion.

Thanks.

For a final release before Dec 10, we would need a RC1 just about this week then.

Considering Pages has not entered Beta stage yet and neither has Commerce, that sounds difficult, although utopistically possible.

We shall see. I am eagerly waiting for a proper beta with pages to begin working on it all.

This is relative. 3.4.0 hadn't RC, only Beta. Anyway, you're taking my ETA too serioulsy. :)

I too have been wondering why there hasn't been another pre-release - Would love to actually play with a functional beta where my rebuilds actually complete ;)

We are not releasing on specific days. We are currently prepping Beta 3 but it will take a bit longer as it includes tons of both bugs fixes and performance improvements we made since upgrading our site here.

Charles, how close to Beta is the Pages app?

Releasing BETA versions with a majority of bugs still existing from the previous releases will only pointlessly increase IPS's workload having to deal with the repeated bug reports and complaints that "why wasn't this fixed yet?"

I too would like to see more BETA releases, however not at the expense of increasing the waiting period to get to RC1 or Final.

If it's really that important just browse the SQL tables and find where the version number is recorded, change it from 2 to 3.  Effectively achieving the same thing as installing a BETA with little fixes, you just saved yourself the upgrade time ;)

Add the new header to beta 2 so skinners can get some completed work done please

I thought one of the features of the new 4.0 system was, when a bug was found in an app, it could get fixed transparently in the core system.  So we don't need many releases of pages or store, when it is fixed in say, forums.

Where did you hear that?

Yes lots of bugs that seem specific to an app are fixed in the core system. But everything is released together. Apps no longer have separate version numbers.

Nah, Final release are late January/early February!
So i guess 1 beta, then RC then final... so 3-4 months, so in total 11 months to make 4.0 version release, its all goooooood - make sure to pay the subscriptions on all the apps  :P

It would be extremely beneficial to get Beta 3 released sometime within the next week, a few forums haven't even managed to get upgraded yet due to upgrade errors. This could potentially spell out further bugs that would need to be investigated / fixed before Beta 4 / RC1.

In saying that, it would be extremely advantageous to have pretty stable bug free Beta 3 release  at the same time.
