What is the ideal # of personal messages to allow?

We just upgraded -- and now IPS no longer allows members to send directly to another another member's email -- they have to leave a PM --

which is causing a rise in PM storage space -- and members are wanting more storage space.

I was wondering who much space these boxes really take up on the server -- and what is a general average # messages that other boards are allowing members to store?

Much thanks-

Bob

Just make it unlimited. PM storage is no different than post storage (in fact it might be less because less indexes ) and I doubt you have more PMs than posts. View them both as the same thing and you'll understand that the limitations are unnecessary. Unless you limit posts too.

The new PM center is a huge and one of the best improvements from the old.

I don't agree. Not about the storage piece, but in the sense that they aren't the same thing. PMs are private, and therefore don't add much value to the online community as a whole.

If members want to keep old PM threads they can use the archive feature and send them as emails to themselves.

Personally, I would rather that we were allowed to set an age limit rather than a number limit, with an option for members to choose to have an archive sent to them when the PMs are old.

Hey Rimi, you were looking for an idea for a new mod/hook ;)

rct2 -- yes that is an idea -- a way for people to "dump" their PM box to their own computer -- maybe a PDF file or something. I like that idea!!
