I'm likely going to make modder's with existing apps shudder, heck, I don't enjoy the thought of upgrading the sphinx plugins I'm writing now..

I think we can all agree sphinx support is rather lacking, both in the core apps, and at many times(guilty) third-party.

2 suggestions.

1: abstract app search plugins better.... I should be handing you search 'query' (where clause to use barring search term to be added to the where 'query', tables, return fields, order) definitions on request, not writing and maintaining 2 distinct seperate plugins to do effectively the same job for 2 seperate engines.

2: abstract the search engines allowed itself, allow more search engine's to be written natively with widespread application support without it needing to necessarily be core.
