grinler Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 We routinely run into issues where we can have 60 accounts registered from the same IP address within a 15 minute period. All of these registrations are SPAM bots who are trying to automatically sign up and register. Is there a way to limit the amount of registrations that can occur in a set period of time from a particular ip address? This helps with administrative tasks and cleanup. It will also make it not as easy for spam bots to register accounts automatically. Thanks
Dmacleo Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 would suck for admin setting up test accounts to test stuff or people from a business/office signing up if this was not configurable option.
Aiwa Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 I'm sure the IPS Spam service takes that into account... Would really hinder people that are sitting on the same LAN that are legitimately trying to register on your board...

I suspect the likelihood of five people signing up from a single IP within 15 minutes is next to nil. Regardless, yes, the spam service probably does take it into account.

Regardless, yes, the spam service probably does take it into account. That's the problem. The SPAM service is not stopping this, which is why I am posting the suggestion. I routinely have this problem with 60 to 150 registrations occurring in 15 minutes. Would really hinder people that are sitting on the same LAN that are legitimately trying to register on your board... How many IP addresses have 60-150 legitimate people registering an account within 15 minutes? I think its safe to venture that almost none. Regardless, if this was a configurable option it would not be an issue.
Aiwa Posted November 5, 2012 Posted November 5, 2012 You guys obviously have never been to a gaming LAN party with dozens up to hundreds of people playing... You try and promote your team... Which results in mass registrations... In cases like that I've had to disable the IPS Spam service for the day in anticipation... I've seen as many as 100 come through in under an hour... A configurable option would be required...

Probably "no more than ___ per ___ minutes/hours/days" like a number of group settings.

bebee Posted January 3, 2013 Posted January 3, 2013 This kind of setting would be helpful to us as well. It would even be better if you could apply it selectively to an IP range.
