TracyIsland
Admittedly, our Portal page is a heavy resource user ... with a typical list of 80 + queries per click. On the shared hosting environment, that load would take anywhere from 3 - 5 seconds. Now it shows 86 queries in 0.9 seconds. Wow!
Kyle F
If you have a large community, it's always best to have a good load time. Dedicated Servers and VPS are obviously better than shared/private hosting anyway since you can customise the cPanel and how your site runs. :)
Sefket
Ever since I got introduced to VPS, I stopped using Shared Hosting. VPS servers are amazing.

Sefket
dedicated even better, no sharing anything with anyone :) Of course it is better. But not everyone has the money for it.
TracyIsland
yeah, I'll say ... we prepaid for a year and took advantage of a summer promotion 20% discount and event, it was expensive: $100/month. Maybe I just need to get used to paying for 'real' hosting service as opposed to rush hour in the subway.

Dedicated Servers and VPS are obviously better than shared/private hosting anyway since you can customise the cPanel and how your site runs. You're right about that. I've read countless knowledgebase articles now from the hosting company about optimizing the server. I just kind of assumed that Plesk would be cPanel in different clothes. Maybe but ... it has been a huge learning curve and hours and hours of time inching along with commands on SSH. Spent so much time in front of the computer, I'm losing my tan .... You would lose a lot of money if you wanted to leave them if their support was bad after a few months. I pay monthly.
Kyle F
Yeah, my dedi cost me almost £90 per month with cPanel and extra IPs added on. :(
Feld0
Admittedly, our Portal page is a heavy resource user ... with a typical list of 80 + queries per click. On the shared hosting environment, that load would take anywhere from 3 - 5 seconds. Now it shows 86 queries in 0.9 seconds. Wow! Haha, I felt the same way when I moved from shared hosting to my first VPS. I've now moved all the way up to a beautifully awesome dedicated server that renders most pages of my forums in ~0.3 seconds. The sheer performance amazes my users and clients alike, and I never want to use shared hosting again. :D
