Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Maalong Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I read with disappointment that you will end the support offered to 3.1 users. I have invested a lot of time and money into customising my site, that runs on 3.1.4 and to have to have the script writers, and skin writer change everything to allow for the upgrade to 3.2 or 3.3 will be costly and time consuming. The support I have received from IPS has been second to none, so it is such a shame that you will no longer offer it to 3.1 users.
Cyrem Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I felt like reporting the topic just to be a pest  . It is a shame though, 6 months left. I was hoping it would go until 2013. But I guess we have to keep moving forward. You can always get unofficial support though I guess.
Taylor J Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 IPS may not do support anymore but other members/users here can still help out with 3.1.x if they wish.
AndyF Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 We still have topics posted in the Technical Support forum from clients using the 2.x series, it will be the same as it is for the 3.0.x series too, officially not supported via the Client Area but you do stand a good chance of receiving peer to peer support in the forum if required. IPS have provided quite a few months notice of the 3.1.x EOL date though. :)
Management Charles Posted February 19, 2012 Management Posted February 19, 2012 We have always had the same policy: we support the current version and one version behind. With the upcoming release of 3.3 that means it's time to retire 3.1 :)
Fast Lane! Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Will there be enough overlap between 3.3 and EOL 3.1 so we can upgrade directly to 3.3 (and potentially 3.3.1 -- bugfix of intial issues)?

Maalong Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 So for someone who runs a website much like your average car driver, in such that he/she needs to take the car to the garage to have the engine fixed, will there still be the ability to get someone to look at the coding if a problem arises?

Not from IPS officially.
Fast Lane! Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 There is no way to unequivocally state that 3.3.1 will be out before 3.1 is retired. Pretty please (if that helps). There are always more bugs in .x releases than after the first maintenance release .x.y (where y is 1). It is a huge deal to upgrade with the skin changes so I really hate to update and then have lots of bugs and need to wait until the .x.1 release. On a seperate note, are there any furl (or URL) changes in general between 3.1.x and 3.3.x that will effect SEO or indexed pages in general? I have a large set of redirects in place to handle the last major change from 2.x to 3.x and I am hoping within the 3.x series there wont be anything major. Can you confirm either way? Thanks.

Any furl changes are minimal and worthwhile. Major views do not have major furl changes, no.
