Better Facebook Connect Integration

Featured Replies

Today i was comparing IPB's integration with facebook with vBulletin's one...and i'm really sad to say that there is actually no comparison. vBulletin smokes IPB in that specific matter.

I think since it's all about networking and socializing, IPS should improve dramatically anything that has to do with Facebook ...

For example, here's what people that using Facebook Connect on vBulletin getting prompted to fill in
%7Boption%7D

You even get prompted to select a new email, select a local password and display name, that's great cause if you later want to disable facebook connect, you will not loose your members!

Whereas, on IPB 3.2.3, you don't even get prompted to create a display name! (hilarious), in other words, if you enable Facebook connect on IPB there is no way back, you can not disable it.....

Just check this video

IPS, if you read this one, really guys, i love my IPB forum, i love the way it functions...but i have to admit that vBulletin is smoking away IPB in that matter, and like it or not, its the era of Facebook, you have to work on that.... It will really make forum owner's life easier..

IP.Board handles this much better:

When you click the "F" logo either on the log in form, or on the register form, it'll check with Facebook to see if you're already connected. If you're not, but the email address on your Facebook is found in the forum DB, then it'll sync accounts and log you in.

If your email address isn't found, it shows you this:

" alt="" class="ipsImage" width="1000px" height="479px">

Assuming you want to register as a new user:

" alt="" class="ipsImage" width="1000px" height="734px">

You can even determine if you want to enforce real names or not via the ACP

I think that's a much better solution. Presenting a user with a massive form when you want to encourage sign-ups via Facebook is never a good idea. I wonder how many see that massive vBulletin form and think "Oh, the heck with that" and leave.

Woop woop! Nice Matt, cause on 3.2.2 version, you were being forced to use your Facebook Name as a Displayed Name....and i was like "What the heck!?"

Plus, my opinion is that you should also include a "Local Password: " field here:
%7Boption%7D

So if we ever disable Facebook Connect, people will still be able to login ;) And anyhow they will be able to login by both the F icon and the normal login form!!

What you think? :)

You can set a password from the UserCP when you log in from Facebook. You can also perform a lost password request to reset the password. I don't see the value in making a new sign-up think of a password they'll probably forget as they won't have to use it again.

Bottom line is - even if you switched off Facebook connect, those existing Facebook members can reset their password to continue using their account.

Right, but Matt, how would people be able to reset if they actually do not know their Log In name?

When people register using Facebook connect, i get that kind of emails:
%7Boption%7D
%7Boption%7D

Sometimes their Log in name is their email, sometimes it's their Facebook Name, it's kinda weird....I'm not sure if that's a bug or something...

I believe its a generally accepted fact that if you sign up on a site with Facebook then in order to log back in to the site (and lets face it most people don't need to do this these days. We stay logged in to everything) you just click on the Facebook icon and you'll be signed in which is how ips does it. Passwords aren't necessary.

Indeed. And you can enter your email address into the lost password form. You don't need to remember your log in name. The email address will be the same one you use for Facebook.

Yeap, but why sometimes the login name is their email and sometimes is their Facebook name?

Yes, obviously. What happens when you want to disable Facebook connect then? People will get confused, they won't even think about restoring their password, cause they were using Facebook connect ..

I would imagine few will remove Facebook connect without good reason. It's not really something you flick on and off with the moon phases.

If you make the decision to switch off Facebook connect, then you can take appropriate steps to inform your members. You can create an announcement, make a banner at the top of the forum, send out a bulk email, etc with the steps required to restore your password.

Hello.

I believe a more important question is why would you do this?

For various reasons, does it really matter why i would like to disable it? I think not.

Yes it does matter for exactly the reasons Matt mentioned. If you are going to disable it then a reasonable administrator would take the proper procedures to notify their members. Therefore, there is no problem.

Will the "Create New account" heading be changed?

Certain users may think that the lower box is a separate method of signing up, when in reality these fields are just "Additional Information"..

I am basing this on the fact that the screen shot shown is what the user is presented with when they click "Create Account" not when they specifically click the facebook icon. Would this assumption be correct?

On studying the image a bit closer, it does make sense. I will have to see it in action to see how the "I need to create a NEW forum account" & "I want to connect an EXISTING account" behave. It's unclear whether these are just highlighted options or actual links :)

So then why do i have SO MANY incomplete members who never seem to finish creating their account - and who now email me saying they can't post - because they didn't finish by choosing a display name?

Are incomplete users forced to complete signup - in that I mean they can't DO ANYTHING on the forums (even read it ) until they choose a display name?

I have a display name, always from my login calls.
I hate that the required fields only appear for FB/Twitter.... this leaves third-party developer with the choice to create bypassing custom fields(lame?) or the user being presented with a blank form, with control wrenched from my login module(what in the deuce made you decide to not show those fields here? blank form does no good to anyone?).
And yes, put the password prompt on the bleeding form for external login methods, this is elementary user consistency.

Is there anything we can do if we want Facebook and Twitter Connect to be able to choose a different username from their real name / username, but do not want Dispay Names on? I don't want users to use something other than their login name because it gets confusing, but I want Facebook / Twiitter users to have a regular username that's displayed and can be used to sign-in without Facebook / Twitter if they choose (ie. a friend's computer).

  • 2 weeks later...

What I can suggest is that the Time zone of the profiles of members who signed up through Facebook / Twitter is always the default of forum. I note that my forum in the Time zone for users who register for this being that always of London.

PS: Sorry my bad english.

What I would like is a simple alert saying "You haven't completed your registration" if they navigate away. Many people tend to think that after they've simply connected their accounts (via FB or Twitter) - without clicking "I want to create a new forum account" - that they're done, but that isn't the case.
