EBrown
I was thinking that a simple but efficient way to stop spam is to add registration tries, so a certain IP/cookie has so many tries to complete it before they are locked. This is useful for preventing brute force in question and answer challenge/Recapcha, but I don't think Recapcha stops all the bots, they already can get by it without brute force I imagine. EBrown
Make it configurable, default could be 15 minutes.
IC233
Can anyone tell me, is it possible to stop new registrations for a short time? We are having lots of bots visiting at the moment and its driving me mad - at least 6 a day, sometimes more. We were wondering if we stopped anyone registering for a few days whether this would also stop the bots?

IC233
Thanks Connor... have found it and activated. I am hoping this will do the trick if it's disabled for a few days... will let you know :)
Irish Fire Services
On the same vein i have been running a medium size board for a few years and within the last two week the volume of spam registrations has suddenly increased from maybe one a week to 10 a day. Running the latest version of the board and i have two questions as well as recaptcha. Has anyone noticed a similar problem or has someone just targetted my board? Best Wishes Al. -EcS-Vyper
I have seen a drastic increase in spam accounts set up too. In the last 5 days I have had 66 signed up that are confirmed spam accounts. I don't think it's specifically aimed at any one board. I think it's just that time of month for spammers! I've taken counter measures by installing a hook from the IPS market place that does most of the dirty work for me. Search around for something that would work best for you. Good luck! Freeborne
I really find a "question and answer" setup is much more effective than CAPTCHA and the users will love you for it, because so many people struggle and strain their eyes trying to guess what the hell those letters/numbers are when they're twisted, twirls and overlapping each other. IC233
Hi all, Yes I have noticed a marked increase of bogus registrations over the last few weeks. I temporarily disabled the registration to our board but as soon as I enabled it again, they were back - and within 5 minutes! They must wait in a queue lol We have now configured the board that only admin can post html links - not that these people actually post anything - they just seem to join for the fun of it and because they can! I was intrigued by your post, -EcS-Vyper - what exactly is the "hook" you have installed, how do you install it and has it worked? At this time I am willing to try anything to stop these people or bots joining our forum!! Thanks in advance
IC233
I am really getting fed up with this now... most of the ones who try to register have false email addresses but some are still posting even though we have configured the board to disallow links. Is there any way please we can stop these people registering?
AndyF
1. Ensure you have email validation enabled 2. Ensure you have the spam service setup / enabled, the default settings for it are safe and sensible in most situations. 3. Setup the Question / Answer challenge. Ideally have several questions so a different one is picked each time. 4. If its still bad, consider some of these options too: You can enable admin validation as well as email validation Consider setting the 'member' group to have all their posts moderated with promotion to a new group and / or after x approved posts. There's a third party hook available too that can help "Stop Forum Spam" its in the Marketplace. Tip: Ensure you do not set it to add the filters to your ban list as it can get out hand if you do that. Had to remove several thousand from a friends board as she had left it enabled. insectdude
http://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/3994-keycaptcha-innovative-anti-spam-service-we-pay-for-your-protection/ https://www.keycaptcha.com/ I replied to a similar topic about this recently, but I really cannot recommended KeyCaptcha highly enough. I've been running it on my site for about a year and had fewer than 5 spam registrations since. I turned off the IPS spam service after running KeyCaptcha for a while as all it was catching was false positives.
