Very Interested in this / is there anyone who can link me to some live examples of the output, can the front page be edited to resemble say a cover of a mag or a guide to whats in the newsletter and has anyone ever set the letter to a pdf and listed up on the free download sites as a way of gaining more traffic ?

cheers for any help

Pete

At this time, the Newsletter is distributed in email format only, it does not support PDF. So... there isn't really a "front page".

That being said, the application has fully customizable HTML templates, so you can make the email look however you want.

  • 4 weeks later...

A new version has been uploaded to the Marketplace. Changes include:

  • The Newsletters application caused a conflict with saving Notification Options in version 3.3. Fixed.
  • Event dates were displayed as 01/01/1970. Fixed.
  • "Next Run" Date is now calculated from distribution start instead of distribution end.

Hmm, hate to say it, but I got an email from a user today who is complaining that despite having unsubscribed from our newsletter, they are still receiving it. I've checked their member notifications and the check boxes are indeed unticked. Also, the text which is meant to appear beside those boxes is missing also, as per screenshot?.

I've unsubscribed myself from a daily newsletter, so if I receive this myself tomorrow there is something wrong with the unsubscription process :)

That's not where you unsubscribe. ;)

Those notifications should only be displayed for Admins/Moderators. They allow them to be notified when distributions are successful or fail.

Unsubscribing is handled ONLY in the User Control Panel. Go to "My Settings" -> "Newsletters" -> "My Subscriptions".

To unsubscribe, you need to uncheck the "Subscribed" checkbox and then save the changes.

Please let me know if there are issues with either of the above items. I will have a fix for the notification text in the next release.

Sorry HS, it was just a user being stupid, for some reason these people want to browse my site when not logged in?! So when they hit the "unsubscribe" button, they get taken to the login page and then presume the unsubscription has went through - even though there is quite obviously no announcement telling them this?!.

Maybe it would be an idea to include a small line of text along the bottom of newsletters explaining to unsubscribe they have to manually untick the options?
Cheers

Someone put it in a (paid) request to allow for unsubscribes even without logging in and checking any boxes. I'm hoping to have that in place fairly soon, but no timetable yet. For now.... I guess just keep this in mind and hope that too many people don't complain? Wish I could be more helpful.....

Only if they have ACP access.....

Will surely buy it if you add a feature to select "who" can write newsletter. It will be nice to let users have the ability to create their own newsletter and share it with members without the necessity to access the ACP!

That would be a tremendous amount of work, as this application currently does not have a public side. I'm not even sure there would be that much demand for it. And even if I DID add this...

The real problem I have with it is allowing "any" member to send anyone else a newsletter. Example: Let's say I'm a member of the mlb.com forums. They have several hundred thousand members on their site (or possibly more, I haven't checked). As a member, I wouldn't want another member to have the ability to send me unsolicited mail. What's to stop someone from creating a newsletter to plug their own business, and then sending it to all members? I'm fairly certain that if I added this, I'd be shot. :)

What you could do instead is create a moderator account with ACP access, and then lock down that account to only access the Newsletter app.

Is anyone having reports of users receiving 'blank' emails?. A few users are complaining they are getting these but I can't make head or tail of why .. some users are saying they are using gmail, but received them fine before, but not anymore? One user is using Yahoo and says they have never received them properly. Anyone else?

How (or where) can I translate "Weekly" word? Can't find it at language strings.

Thank you

Where do you see the word "Weekly"? Are you talking about in the ACP when setting the interval?

In the System Settings you have an option to "Encode Newsletter Content". Try turning that on for one distribution and see if that resolves the problem. Some email clients (or servers) handle HTML emails in strange ways. If you encode the content, they usually all decode it the same way.

Let me know if that helps.

** Important Notice Regarding Support **

Please note that I will be going on maternity leave at some point within the next couple of weeks (I can't tell you exactly when, although believe me, I wish I knew!). If you post an issue or question and don't hear back from me, you are not being ignored... I'm just busy diapering, feeding, and doing all the other things that come along with this event. :)

I will be taking off for roughly 4 weeks (if everything goes smoothly), and I will post here within a day or two after the baby is born so that you are all aware of when this will start. I WILL be checking email/PM's/support threads periodically, but will ONLY be responding to critical issues (for example, if somehow a mod makes your entire site go down).

Thank your all for your patience and continued support.

Esther

I would still love to see any example of this news letter if there is one available ?

I personally don't have any examples (other than test material, which is pure junk). If anyone here has anything they'd like to show off, I'd really appreciate it.... :)

First off, congrats Esther, sure everything will go great for you

I'll try the suggestion you made regarding blank emails too - and as for examples of the newsletter I send one each week with the following:

1. Manual Content (whatever announcement is relevant for that week)
2. Latest Downloads (last 10 downloads which were added within the past week or so)
3. Latest Topics (last 10 topics which were added within the past week or so)
4. Hot Downloads (last 10 downloads added within the last couple of weeks or so which have had 10 or more downloads)
5. Hot Topics (last 10 topics added within the last couple of weeks or so which have had 5 or more downloads)
6. Birthdays (This Week)

Here are some screenshots - nothing too complex but I did change the templates slightly to remove some info I felt wasn't really needed but I can't actually remember if I included the screenshots by editing the templates myself or whether that was possible by default - sure I edited the template myself :)
