A few Lessons IP can learn from newcommers

For Google+ :

- The photo gallery. It's absolutely gorgeous, by all means.

Don't know what I mean? Take a look at these screenshots:

YouTube videos neatly joining into a collage of pictures, the comment button being inside the picture itself to improve the general look and feel, advanced information about the pictures and neat effects, the comment system... Generally, all I can say about it is that it is gorgeous. Including a few of these features in IP.Gallery is not going to hurt anyone. Because frankly, with all due respect, I never felt it looked or felt very smooth to use. Whilst Google+' photo system is pretty much the definition of smooth.

Also take a close look at the way content integrates into posts- something that Invision Powerboard may want to copy. Have the option that instead of the usual links, it will also give a small preview of the content. It doesn't have to be chaotic or hideous and should be toggleable both, in the ACP and in the posts themselves. It'd take Invision Powerboards already great article-ish features and make them amazing.

For XenForo:

Notifications.

Those.

I realize, Invision PowerBoard now offers a comparable system. But I would like to see IPB to expand on it, an attractive (eyecatching) number on the icon itself and more importantly- notifications for pretty much everything imagineable. Comments on gallery images, moderator actions done upon your posts, likes, plugin-generated notifications, quotations of your posts, replies to threads you pushed a little notify on, announcements on the forum, news on your tickets in IP.Nexus. Make the notification system really "replace" the usual "checking up" on new content.

To be honest, I have used IPB 3.1 for months now, and haven't even noticed the system yet! While it's such a great chance to make IPB more immersive.

I would also like to suggest some initiatives to stimulate the development of plugins. I am not sure- I may be wrong- but from what I have seen the free community backing of IPB isn't as strong as it used to be. With sites like Invisionize being abandoned and pretty much all decent plugins costing money. That's a shame, because it's a great product and it improves by the day. And being able to customize it should be the major attraction point- yet it lags behind other software on this point. I am suggesting initiatives such as awards for plugins and developers, (monthly) prizes and the likes. Also a consideration could perhaps be making sure the API and market is entirely public and handing out a license to one or two developers a month based upon their contributions. Stimulate the less-welfaring amongst us to develop for IPB and get their hands on this great piece of software that way.

Edit: I'd like to elaborate a bit, I do not specifically mean raw amounts, I mean the general quality, price-quality and broadness of plugins, which to my opinion has decreased since IPB 2.X. The price Quality especially saddens me, I see some plugins costing 50 dollars which are available for free on almost every other system...

Perhaps I am entirely wrong in my idea's and thoughts, but I figured I should share them nonetheless.

Thanks for your time!

I agree, I think there should be more appreciation sent towards the community, I've noticed the same thing aswell.
