Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications Matt November 11, 2024Nov 11
Posted February 7, 201114 yr At the moment exporting and importing skins is an annoying process, requiring you to download and upload 3 files. Could this be simplified such that it can be done with just a single file?
March 16, 201114 yr I guess it (could) be combined into one large XML, but the problem here being the skin to associate the images with. :) I've not really used any other forum software for years, but I do recall (I'm going back to about 04/05) with another software you uploaded one xml which was the skin itself and then had to manually FTP all the images / directories up. IP.Board is a bit simpler in that respect as you only have to import two (three sometimes, but that depends on if the skin author provided a replacements file) xml's and you are usually done so apart from the possibility to combine them I'm not sure what to say. Combining them may cause problems if your server has a low upload_max_filesize too...

March 17, 201114 yr The skin being uploaded of course, what else? As you know you have to upload the xml for the templates and then the images. The 'problem' here is if it was one huge xml, apart from the risk of exceeding server limits (upload_max_filesize first at a guess) you would not easily be able to set which skin to associate the images with. Does not sound much of a problem, until you want to purposely associate them with a different skin. Currently uploading two (or three, depending on the author) via the ACP is straightforward anyway :)

Supporting a way to upload a skin via a single file does not require you to drop support for uploading it very two of three files, does it?
March 17, 201114 yr It might not effect you but it might effect some on shared hosting where its locked at 2mb. :) , fwiw: no it would not effect me either, but I am looking at the bigger picture. Anyway have to wait to see what the developer's / staff say.
March 17, 201114 yr I don't really see the need for this. An average community isn't going to be importing skins all the time. You could say installing an APP is more involved then importing a skin. I do like your opinion and it would be easier, but this isn't something I would call to be very important. I have suggested exporting in one big file in the past, so we will see :). None the less thanks for the feedback.
