Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
kgp43_merged Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 Hi, I got a bit of a spamming issue on my forum, they create an account and make like 20 topics in a row. I think it would be nice to have a limit on how many topics you can create within a certain time-frame, like the search flood control.
DawPi Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 Hello, check my free mod for that: [url=") Topics per Time. Hope that helps.
Mark H. Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 You can also set the Flood Control, which limits posts to one every "X" seconds. That's set in the ACP -> System Settings -> Security & Privacy -> "Flood control delay (in seconds)".
DawPi Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 Yes, but he wanted flood control only for topics, and this option affect topics and posts.. ;)
kgp43_merged Posted December 27, 2010 Author Posted December 27, 2010 Yes, but he wanted flood control only for topics, and this option affect topics and posts.. ;) That is correct. These spammers create massive amount of topics (no replies), want to prevent that.
Mark H. Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 Well, the solution we used on my forum is to make the default member Group unable to start ANY new topics until they make one reply to an existing post, when they are then promoted to a Group that can start new Topics. Members to Full Members. Solved our problem, and didn't even need Flood Control. We have had zero spammers in well over a year now. That's one other option.

Thanks, I will try that :) But how do you inform new members about that? I guess a new visitor can register for the only purpose to ask a new question, which he can't before he reach 1 post. Your not afraid too many members will leave the forum because they think it's bugged or something, since they cant make a new topic?

Have a look at my hook on how to inform the newly registered users about that rule and of any other rule thjat you might want them to know of. http://community.invisionpower.com/files/file/3823-display-a-message-to-your-newly-registered-users/

Your not afraid too many members will leave the forum because they think it's bugged or something, since they cant make a new topic? We have several places where that info is posted. Announcement, pinned post in a couple forums, in the "Forum Rules", etc. We've not had any problem with people registering and then leaving. The forum is open to viewing for Guests in the first place, since we want the info available for public viewing, so those who do sign up have generally been there for a while and know the rules. :)

Is there a way to make it only appear to a specific User Group (no time limit) ?
