Post Icons

You are likely correct, I have never used them, however, member's sometimes do. Correct me if I am wrong, but can you not turn them off in the admincp?

Nonetheless, yes they can be changed, in the post_icons area via FTP, granted they will have to have the same extension and you can only change them, not add any...well without a template edit. :)

I just looked and I don't see any option for that. Most likely, you'd have to edit template.

member's sometimes do

Tell them, whoever wants some change, 5 bucks a piece....hehehe

Just to add, there never was an ACP option to adjust them even on 2.x :)

As above you can add / edit as you see fit in /public/style_extra/post_icons

A small skin edit will allow them to show on the forum index again if required (the same way it was on 2.x)

While I'm here, I wrote this a while ago as a few people requested it, partly related to your enquiry anyway. http://community.invisionpower.com/resources/articles.html/_/ipboard-3x/skinning/adding-changing-post-icons-r508

I have to be blunt; I was shocked that there was no provision in the ACP for changing post icons. I will look into Andy's code, but please keep in mind not all of your users will be comfortable hacking or mod'ing the core application code.

This seems like a very basic functionality that is present in vBulletin, so I would suggest looking into this when your development schedule permits. =)

It's been like this since IPB started - I wouldn't consider it a high priority myself.

To change post icons you don't need to hack code - you just upload the icons via FTP, overwriting the existing ones. Andy's suggestion is just to allow showing the post icon in the forum index listing, something we felt was not needed when we were planning 3.x. Opinions differ, naturally.

A lot of users (root admins) may not use them, but I have seen plenty of forums that have moved to other software due to the lack of innovation in regards to IPB. Some of the most basic features that other forum software offer IPB is and has always and still does have a lack of. IPB has not truly been innovated and even if you did add some of the missing features that your customers (clients) say is a feature needed what type of business turns around and says, "well we don't see it as a high priority." Perhaps you need to grab a few books on a running a business and the most basic rule you learn is the customer is always right. For example if I run a video game community or software developer community if I had more control over the icons I could lessen the amount of FORUMS needed by replacing them with Post Icons (PS3, Wii, 360, PC, MAC, etc). Yes people can change them by FTP, but the limited amount is more of an insult when you tell people, "hey you can change them like this."

Alright now that my ranting is done anyone who cares about POST ICONS. I myself requested a 3rd party IPB Application called: Advanced Post Icons. It will allow you to upload and remove post icons, assign user groups who can view them, assign each FORUM it's own set of POST ICONS, etc. The application was created by DawPi. If you need such post icon control just contact him/her.

The reality of the situation is that we get thousands (probably more like hundreds of thousands) of requests and simply cannot fulfill every single one of them. We listen to feedback from all of our customers. When a particular thing comes up over and over, it obviously warrants some extra attention. When something has barely changed since 1.x and almost never comes up, the message is relatively clear that the majority of our customers are not overly concerned about the feature. My personal viewpoint is I'd rather be upfront and honest with our customers where something stands than lead you on with statements like "Oh sure, we'll look into that soon" if I don't believe it's going to happen. By saying "we don't consider this a high priority" I'm not attacking you or shooting down your suggestion, I'm just trying to give you a realistic expectation is all. If suddenly every single one of our customers agreed that this needs to change right now, I'm sure the suggestion would become a high priority one.

Further, I'm not sure that I'd agree that because we haven't changed how "post icons" work that IPB isn't innovative. I suppose opinions may differ over anything, but many of the current trends becoming standard in other forum packages started right here. :)

My forum used to use post icons to catecorize theads when were still using IPB2 and lost that moving over to IPB3. I know we can still change the skins to show them, but its still a hack.

What Kage Kazumi was referring to, is a feature that certain forums have, where post icons are used to categorize threads with handy features like filters.

Right now we resorted to just adding a text in front of threads, which seems quite ghettoish for a software like IPB.

Mind you that in this case I am talking about post icons applied to a thread when used in the OP. Post icons on replies are just fluff.
