Tom_K
I'm currently in the process of moving my forum from vB 3.8 to IPB 3.1 and I noticed something that is a potential problem for me. In vB 3.8 you can choose a setting so that the database stores the data which specific post in a topic has already been read. If a page has 8 new pages of posts and you only read the first page, the topic remains unread and when you return to the first page of that topic, you see a link which then takes you to the first unread post in that topic. In IPB 3.1 things work a little different. If you read the first page of a topic, the whole topic is marked as read even if you have not read the other pages of the topic. Is there a setting that controls this or is this a feature that IPB 3.1 doesn't have? My users and I really like that vBulletin feature so this might be the main reason to not switch to IPB 3.1. You have a 100% crystal clear understanding of the situation. IBP does not have that type of marking system. The only way I've found to approach the situation is to either open a new tab/window and leave the partially unread topic open, or to make a book mark. May I recommend, Read It Later. It's a must-have for me in this scenario and many others...and if you have a smartphone, it's even more useful :) On topic though, I too would like to see the partial read/do not mark read functionality in IPB
Tom_K
I can't believe noone has ever suggested this functionality?
Abomination
I can't believe noone has ever suggested this functionality? I asked about it several times. Although I cannot find it right now, I believe the (at least semi) official answer that feature is not being considered.
Tom_K
Can we get an official reply from IPB regarding this? Will this ever be improved in the future?
bfarber
It is something on our considerations list, but no promises. Matt intends to work on topic marking functionality a little bit further in 3.2, and will review this again at that point.
Tom_K
It's been almost two months. Has a decision been made about this yet? My offer to pay extra so this feature is introduced still stands. Without it I don't even have a reason to renew my licence since I cannot migrate my vBulletin forum. optrexnz
IPB currently has 2 unread options. The first and most common is to go to the last post, the 2nd option is to go to the first unread post of a given topic. The 2nd option is currently the best you are going to get and matches my recollection of using vb. Other than that any other improvements are going to be looked at in 3.2, as previously stated
Clickfinity
I made noises about this too when I moved from vB. Four months on and my members are still complaining about it - it is really annoying when you navigate away and lose your place in a long thread.PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE IPS - put a per-page thread marking system into place in 3.2  (w00t) :D :)

Tom_K
Please, make it work the same way as vBulletin or better. I know IP Board isn't a vBulletin clone but this would eliminate the main reason that is preventing me from migrating from vBulletin. Is there an ETA for 3.2? Is this a matter of weeks, months, years?
Tom_K
Any news regarding this feature making it into 3.2?
Mat B
I don't know what you're asking. Matt has quite clearly said it's on the plan for 3.2, so I'm not sure what news you're expecting?

I'd forgotten about this thread, but I expect Tomzi is just wanting the same thing as most of us other vB converts - some confirmation that it has actually made it into 3.2 and some info on how it's going to work in practice? The teasing slow-reveal blog entries are getting us all worked-up you see .... (w00t) (w00t) (w00t) (w00t) Cheers, Shaun :D
Management Matt Posted February 18, 2011 Management Share Posted February 18, 2011 Just so I'm clear, this means that a topic won't be marked as read unless you are on the last page?
Clickfinity
Just so I'm clear, this means that a topic won't be marked as read unless you are on the last page? Yes, and the last point/page you read up to will be remembered too ... :) If I've read up to page 9 of a 32 page thread and I navigate away - the thread is NOT marked as read, and the "new posts" orange icon will take me back to page 9 - where I left off reading the last time. Cheers, Shaun :D

Tom_K
That's great news. Like CycleChat said, I was just looking for confirmation this hasn't been forgotten. Can't wait for 3.2 to be released. :)
