I was remarking on your comment that the XF code would be some sort of joke...or did I misunderstand you?

thank you for clarifying that coz I thought you were commenting on someone else's post %7Boption%7D

Facebook is not a forum. It's a social networking site. It's a totally different market.

Facebook is in the conversation market ... just like forums ...

right now they have comments working well and going to 1 billion users ...

all they have to do is expand the conversations and most forums will be gone overnight

Yes, check better as they speak about "pre-sales" scheduled for the end of august.

Before this license, a couple of months ago I've bought the vB suite, and tested it. To be honest meanwhile I was with SMF, and I'm totally unhappy of IPB, but the vB is something that I abandoned immediately. Maybe I've been too fast leaving the vB suite after not more than a week, but if I compare the IPB and vB I prefer IPB, even if SMF (free) is more than special. It only scared me the fact that it's on an alfa, beta, gamma since a couple of years, and the version 1.1.x is obsolete and without any moderation control.

This new xenforo is "funny". It must be tested from a bunch of people before they may speak of a price or fee. IMHO it's too soon even to say good or bad.

Yeah, vb 4.0+ bad, vb pre 4.0 good.

No it doesn't - it has a dropdown which is fine for two or three feeds, but horrible for anything greater than that.

Try having 100 feeds in it - it fails.

Whereas the method used by Xenforo allows multiple feeds easily

I also like the fact that the feed (and assume any admin icons) highlight as your hover over them.

+1 100% Agree. IMO in IPB it gets totally ugly after 15+ feeds.

So now we have the major

phpBB3, SMF, vBulletin, IPB, XenForo

You still consider SMF as major? I deleted them from my watchlist, the progress is really boring and slow.

Facebook is too general/big to take out any niche forums

True for now ...

this shouldn't prevent forum developers from thinking of ways to deliver a constantly evolving and better product.

Innovative competition can only be a good thing for us all.

Couldn't agree more John, competition helps everyone lift their game.

I really love it, been posting a bit over there and it is super quick , I love the simplicity and clean fresh feel of it. It feels very nimble and without waste.

I think they are going to do very well indeed with xenforo.

I don't see Facebook hitting 1 billion for a very very long time, and even so that wouldn't be unique users. The 500 million mark - that isn't unique users either is it? I know a lot of people with more than one account..

Facebook had something like 13 million signups in May, and in June didn't even hit 500,000 sign-ups - they've reached the point where its going to be hard for them to get new users.

Right, which means they need to learn how to make money of existing users - cause they can't rely on new ones..

Alex this means that we know where our potential new forum members are to be found ...

now if only IPB provided a Facebook friends importer tool. :)

An importer tool of any kind would be a big no-no to facebook. They don't like letting data leave their walled garden. We have Facebook Connect to login, which is essentialy that, because it does link facebook friends.

Someone could also set up facebook invites, but those are actually being phased out by Facebook (along with profile boxes) in a couple of weeks.

Yes it looks like everybody is trying to wall up the internet like AOL tried to do. :ermm:

If facebook's users (like me) could be allowed to delete their account easily and they cancel totally the all traces of that user, and even merge the accounts double and triple, accounts that are commercial accounts...the figure of the users should be about 200 millions, no more (and maybe less). But don't underestimate this figure, it means that we all now are there, and any viral advertising is precious like gold, as they have the...world in a software, with the all datas available? Do you know what do I mean?
Yes, the privacy setting is silly, but is more silly people who share private things on a social network. I love and use Facebook, but moderately. We cannot survive without water, but if you are not able to swim, you find the death in the high water. This is what do I think.
Now, about the Xenforo..we all here are administrators, and not simple users. Can we a moment try to be users? It hasn't a consolidated staff, the forum is taking now it's flight, and people on the xenforo ask for the PRESALES Looool. :D
But skins, mods, and attractive (observed from user side) look...can you see some of these ingredients? I don't. Not actually.
They maybe are on the right road, but who's brave to migrate to a board that hasn't a story yet, and the pre-sales are ready for the end of the summer? Presales? And what do they give with pre-sales? The things I see? Ok, perfect. Viva Wordpress, Drupal and the free, blaming softwares, but *free*-
When you give money for something that elsewhere is free, you are asnking a ton of guarantees, not yet expressed anywhere there.
Think about it.

Facebook is just another Myspace just as Mocospace used to be...

There will be more social sites and users will travel there with their friends...

"Check out this site! It is better than the other!"
Mocospace => Myspace

"WHAT!? You don't have a Facebook?!"
Myspace => Facebook

Just a matter of time until another social site is found...
The increase in porn sites and malestors swaying into new social site to gain users should be enough proof of this repetition...
