AFA66
Hi, I have a suggestion. It would be great in a future update to have the ability for a user to have the ability to remove one's self from the members list. I believe that they should have the right to the privacy of not have to show their profile to everyone else. Thanks!
A Walk in Faith
What you could do in the meantime is create a nice form page where they can enter their reason for being removed, if they want their account deleted or just 'suspended' etc... then explain that the removal process will take x hours.. Have that form send an email to the Admin and then you can manually delete/remove their account. This would create a method for you to collect information on why people are leaving your site, you would be notified of each removal and they would in the end get their results. Just a thought to work with until it's added or a mod is made.... Jamie
Amy T
I had one or 2 members in the 3 years I have had the site that have sent me a PM asking me to delete their account. I know one of the times was because they accidentally had 2 accounts the other was just some one who joined for a short time to report a spammer. I agree with A Walk in Faith. dr. Jekyll
I think AFA66 suggest not a way to self delete members but only to give them the possibility to appear or not on the members list to others users :)
Amy T
Oh now that is a nice idea that a few of my members would love.
Hennet
afaik there is a option under user groups to make the group not appear in the member list.
Amy T
Indeed although you would need to make an easy way for the member to change over to that group.

dr. Jekyll
And AFA66 suggestion (which I like it) remember me about an EU directive, which I'm not sure is already in force, which requires that personal data of children under 18 are not visible to search engines and non-registered users. Now is questionable if an IPB profile is a "personal data", for me is not, but is also questionable if politics will understand the difference. Sure many girls will be happy about such possibility :)
TrixieTang
I honestly don't get this whole thing about profile "privacy", in fact I think it would be far more of a bad thing than a good thing if any sort of profile privacy options were ever added. It's a forum, not Facebook or Myspace. Profiles are meant to be a place where other forum members can easily find content you've posted on a forum and see a little bit of information about you, they're not supposed to be your complete autobiography. Allowing users to make their profiles private in any way would just make forums harder to use, if you don't want people finding out all your personal info from your forum profile then you don't enter all your personal info, simple as that. bfarber
The way I generally view it - if you don't want people to see private data about you, don't post it. A profile is basically anonymous, until you start adding personal details. I'm not sure about the benefit of allowing users to not show up in the memberlist (and/or blocking their profile) to the site as a whole. I'm open to opinions on this. Amy T
The hidden profile would be hard to do for a forum but I know my own members would not mind only allowing friends to view some of the more private data of the profile but still showing the profile for every one. Which is kind of like facebook. Like you said if you do not want private info on the site do not put it there how ever there are those members who want to put private info on there that only their friends can see. I personally am not for nor against that. The other idea though I am more for as with a site like mine were you have an rpg system that allows one member to attack another in the game, those who do not want attacked could remove them selves from the members list so they do not get attacked. Although new improvements on the game has allowed members to opt out of the game it self so the need for it becomes less of a need.
Jυra
Your posts will likely tell more than one's profile. Many people don't even edit their profile.
A Walk in Faith
Opps, I guess I misread what AFA66 was asking to do... I missed the members list part of your question. Jamie

It could make sense if the personal profile was more advance and personal (as on My Space) and visible (at least the part which contain personal information) only to members that have been add as friends. :)

madLyfe
i think it would be cool to have the option to only allow people you have friended to see your "full" profile and non friends to see a slimmed down basic info view..
Nervosa
Having a way users can remove themselves from your forums would be a nice idea. When I have requests like this, the users want posts removed also and I feel that mess things up. (usually they are users that end up regretting the way they act on the forums) Maybe we could have an option in the cp for users to "turn off" there accounts. This would be a forum for them to fill out saying way and then would have to be ok'd by admins before any action could be done. If ok'd, they would be invisible on the user list, unable to post / create topics, basically just access to PM. When viewing a post, there name would be changed to something like "Inactive User" avatar and user info would be hidden.

I can't see why, if we ever added such a feature, we'd turn off everything but pms. If you turned your account off, it would be off. Period. Amy T
They could just rejoin. I have had members leave for a long time and then come back and just create a new account even though they still have the old account. Usually because they forgot the password and the email they used to join the first time is gone.
bfarber
Or they could use the contact administrator link on the error page we would undoubtedly show.
