Feature "Manage Languages" needs some improvements

Searching for words sometimes is pain. I need translate for example word by to my language. But this word is in the many strings. If I search for that word I get 18 pages of results.

I tried this: "by" but I got the same.

Suggestion:

  • If I search for by I should get results with all strings were is word by.
  • If I search for "by" I should get results where are strings ONLY with this word. Then I get only about 8-9 result strings.

UPDATE: I am very unsatisfied with this feature. It's very unfamiliar who want to translate. Everytime we MUST looking for strings it's so hard when one word is in more strings.

Little example:

%7Boption%7D

How can I find that In:? I got lot of results but nothing belongs to that!

And another: I discovered that By: suddenly was switched to english on my board. That By: will be translated when you translate string by in world pack public_blog! What have blogs with board index? Someone broke strings I don't know if latest IP.Links upgrade made this but you make one big mistake: you use one word for more strings, then translation is much more harder. Maybe it's not important for you but I am already tired when everytime I have to repair translations caused some updates.

"In: " is in forums_public_boards - the key is 'in'.
"By: " is in the same pack - the key is 'by'.

I found that by opening the language pack file (they're separated into applications and sections - so anything appearing on the board index you know will be in forums_public_boards) and using my editor so search for "In:"

This could probably be reported as a bug to the blog tracker.

Basically, if you have blog installed and the hook that shows recent entries enabled, the hook has to load the blog language file. That language file happens to define "By" similarly to the board index, and the language key overwrites the one originally set for the board index. Minor thing, easy to fix, was just never reported I'd guess.

We're planning to overhaul the language management in a later release, we don't have a definite time line for that, but it's something we want to do sooner rather than later.

Ah, don't you kid. This is a problem since 3.0.0! This issue explains everything: http://community.inv...-all-languages/

Simply we can't translate addons; can't import 'cause translate all languages set. We can't 'install' translation per application; only works if it's in one XML and always gives problem... it stays loading, loading, and end up in an error.

Too bad!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello,

I have a bit of a problem with a custom translation also, hopefully Mark or someone else will fill me in where I can find the two strings. :) Basically I've translated everything under "public_*" and I still have "Calendar" and "Gallery" links in the top main navigation pane, instead of my local translation for it.

%7Boption%7D

Where are they hiding? Also, If I'm not mistaken, there is currently no way of having multiple locale "custom profile fields", right?

You can add the following two language bits to translate calendar and gallery: calendar_display_title and gallery_display_title

In the gallery and calendar application respectfully or somewhere else, because that didn't work? :)

They should go in the System -> public_global language section

Hm, not working either. I'm presuming it's enough to add it to only the new language, not all languages.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, should I rather open a ticket? :)
