Twitter has a variety of purposes, IMO. I have a personal account and I tweet often to share thoughts, links, ideas, questions, discussion, etc. Twitter can also serve as a news/content aggregator by following accounts that tweet links to articles, posts, etc. Nothing wrong with that.

Not really trying to spam Twitter......ok maybe a tiny bit

But if my members are following my site on Twitter, whats the harm in letting them know whats going on while they are away?
